Ugh, sorry my track came out so lousy. The mix was rushed due to a label deadline which is why it didn't master well and sounds too quiet compared to all the other tracks on the release. I spent so much time with the production that the mix surely suffered. Deadlines are for newspapers and I don't wish to hurry my work for a label ever again. I plan to make a much better remix for the upcoming Androcell album definitely out in 2010.
My humble apologies.

Hi Tyler,
I'm not ok with what you said here..
After analysing, you track is one of the most loud on the compilation, the proof is simply the results from Audition amplitude statistics (left channel):
-Aes Dana: average rms: -15.76, max: -12.68
-Androcell: average rms: -11.18, max: -9.93 (!)
-Astropilot: average:-10.93, max: -10.13
-Shakri: average-10.49, max: -9.66

I had some comments from different artists, almost all say that their track sounds weak on the compilation..It's a "problem" for everyone, don't worry

As the mix should be done more properly with more time, I agree.Maybe a deadline of 2 months is not enough time to make a track.

But this track is great, I had no complains whatsoever about it, never apart from the artist himself today

Yes I agree the mastering should be better, in a way there's a little bit too much low freqs around 40Hz.

Anyways I'm very glad to hear that a proper remix of "Seahorse Dreams" will be released on your next album
Great news about your next album coming up!

Btw you should consider to come to play maybe in November in Canada, this would be awesome !

All the best,

Zen

Zen,

You can "analyze" the track all you want - at the end of the day if doesn't hit my ears right how do those stats matter? Re-read my words carefully - I said it "sounds" too quiet compared. Also, you're reacting as if I blamed your mastering. When really, I know that the problem lies completely in my mixing. The deep pads are drowning out details and making it muddier than it should have been.
As for deadlines, they just aren't good for me. I like to leave tracks alone for weeks at a time (while working on other music and art) and come back to them to understand what they need and how to make them better, whether it be editing, pinpointed mixing, additional production, etc. Just know that in the "2 months" allowed I was doing plenty of other stuff that needed my attention as well. I guess it's a perfect reason why the new Androcell album is taking forever and a day. Charles said it right - I strive for perfectionism - what can I say, nature is my role model.

Tell me anywhere in my post that I said "the mastering should have been better" ??? So please don't say you "agree" like I said that here.

As for playing, how many times do I have to say it - I don't have a passport, am a nervous flyer, and can't afford to travel.
I make a living from my artwork and music production. That barely leaves anything left for anything other than bills. Leaving to play live sets almost always sets me back in my work. If I charged what I really need to not take a loss playing live, no one would want to pay it. Aside from that, at the last show I played I damn near bloodied peoples eardrums with a 3 sec full-frequency wall-of-sound demon scream after a nasty Ableton Live crash from a Korg wavestation plugin. I was so caught off guard it took me a sec to grab the fader to the floor. Can't feel right about charging what I feel I need when the show isn't even a 100% perfect. People were literally running away with their hands over their ears shrieking in terror. It was nuts. I guess that is what I get when I can't even afford a macbook pro that can handle what I want to do. Still using a 1.67ghz powerbook that just can't handle the load I'm trying to give it in a "live" set performance that I feel is actually worth what I need to charge.

But hey, since I guess you *feel* I "outted" you on a forum, you're doing the same to me.
When in all truth, I just like to keep my fans *honestly* informed about things. The world has enough deception already.

Bah, I knew should have kept my thoughts to myself. Definitely won't be visiting here again for a time.

Peace.

Okay Mr perfectionist

You're right, sometimes we should keep our thoughts for ourselves, me included.... and that's good you're pointing to the essential of things about your track and your living.
Sorry about the "agrees" everywhere lol my bad.

I hope some time in the future you'll have a better living from your art. You're amazing me (and a lot of other dudes) at each time you do something.

But imo don't be shy asking a good price for your performances, I know that many "known" artists just came to play "live" here with their laptop, only pressing "play" and getting out with $1000 to $ 2000, all other expenses paid.

Good luck and keep the good work up

On the one hand, it's Tyler's tune and he's got as much as a right to criticize it as anybody. If not more than one. And I think a bit of obsessiveness and perfectionism is a good thing in a producer. If he's not happy with the track, I think he's very much entitled to his opinion, and I look forward to the remix.

But I should say that I thought the track sounded fine and I've been enjoying it quite a lot, so no apologies are necessary.

Review:

As the second installment in Altar Records’ element series, “Water” brings us a fresh new look into DJ Zen’s stashbag. Boasting an all-star cast of ambient soundscapers and a wonderfully themed & cohesive track listing, this release further heightens my excitement for the future of this new label.

The album begins with a bright, symphonic piece by Asura. This song flows like a majestic river through the forest, bubbling with life and commanding our attention to its graceful display of power! This river leads us to the vast ocean in the form of “Seahorse Dreams” by Androcell, which takes us deeper and deeper below the surface. This is a wonderfully done track with ambience that really tickles your imagination.

Next are two of my favorite up-and-coming artists back to back! Chronos delivers nothing short of his usual epic journeys in song form with “Planetarium.” Eerie, dynamic ambience and a haunting melody bring this track to life wherever one is listening to it. “Voda” by Astropilot is a beautiful hybrid of seemingly acquatic ambience and driving shamanic slow-trance. This one is sure to make for a great opening track for the early evening psychill DJ’s out there!

The stage is now set for Aes Dana to delight us with a new and exclusive track, “Cyan.” This track with its 4-on-the-floor beat, subtle ambient melodies & textures, and mysterious ancient vocals serves as a fine example of the musical amalgamation that vaguely defines our little genre.

The album changes pace a little with “Sugar Rush (Kanc Cover Remix)” by Man With No Name, which is much more progressive and melodically driven. His use of tone and pitch easily lead your mind away from the sometimes unpleasant and mundane world around us to a world of pure imagination. However, Shakri’s “Lysergic Atmosphere” dissolves this peaceful moment into a pool of swirling in-your-face psychedelia. An industrial-esque synth lead directs the listeners’ thoughts; the pounding bass drum keeps us moving; and Terence McKenna shows up in our sonic vision like the helping spirit of an ancestor.

Before the album comes to an end, DJ Zen presents us with his extended remix of “God Is Mine” by Zymosis. This is a wonderfully sculpted track, moving the listener through many modes and motifs varying from mystical flutes to abstract breaks, to a tribal stomp. The water cycle comes full circle and evaporates into the air with “Creation of Tefnet” by Ra. This dynamic, dramatic, and mournfully melodic track makes for the perfect ending to this thematic compilation.

Recommendation: For all those looking to keep up with the cutting edge of this sound, and for fans of any of these great artists. You will be glad you ordered this one!

Hey there Androcell, my name's Iz and I'm a friend of Gabriel's. You and I are actually myspace friends, as I requested it a few months ago after listening to *Water* and LOVING Seahorse Dreams. If you kept my message, you'll see that that's what I wrote you. I kept playing that song over and over again! I understand that you created it, so you have your own demands about it, but if this makes any difference at all, from a *fan*, it's a superbe track.

I won't get too involved in the deadlines discussion, but I guess I'll just say that they exist everywhere! And I think you did something beautiful within that time-frame:)

The whole album is wonderful from start to finish, but my two favorite tracks are yours, and Ra's.

I wanted to write this because I stumbled upon this discussion and asked Gabriel what it was all about, and was stunned that you were so disappointed with the track, when it's one of my favorites!

Anyway, again, I hope you feel better about it. Often, the most endearing art is the one that we don't have total control over, which consequently emanates the spontaneity of life. Your track feels alive, and I thank you for it:)
