Artist : André Absolut
Title : Fusion EP
Format : Digital EP
KUMD012
Release date: March 2008

Tracklist
01: Fusion [130 bpm]
02: Fly With Me, Lie With Me [130 bpm]
03: Andre Absolut & V-Tunes - Boxrocker (Last Resort Mix) [128 bpm]

Let’s be straightforward about it, I consider the withdrawal of Swiss producer André Absolut from music production to be one of the biggest losses for the progressive scene. Before he embarked in a new direction, namely writing soundtracks for theater productions, his tracks and rmx had been released at the very best prog labels such as Sog, Avalanche, Plusquam, Baroque, Flow, Tribal Vision and Nascent, to name a few of the most famous, and earned him a strong reputation at the Olympus of Prog-House, Prog-Trance for his unique style and detailed, funky, pristine production skills. Last but not least, the Zurich-based label Kumquat, now managed by DJ Ondrej, which previously published some of Absolut’s biggest hits in late 2006, returns to unleash a series of his unreleased tunes before the label takes new stylistic directions.

Andre Absolut – Fusion
“Fusion” is more club-oriented although there is no doubt it’s so packed with galvanizing ideas that it will thrive on an open-air dancefloor. It showcases Absolut’s ability to create an original blend of electro-house and technoish influences while being in no way submissive to any of these styles. This time his sound begins with a catchy subterranean gurgling and undulating bassline, until a powerful reverberated stab slides in. Then a few well-orchestrated tricky little hooks introduce a brilliant array of surging zooming synths, nano scratch samples, and quirky twists which make the piece groovy and interesting all the way, and even though it contains little evolution, it is crafted with rare skill. Almost two years after it was produced in the studio, this still sounds fresh and original.

Andre Absolut - Fly With Me, Lie With Me
The 9 mn of “Fly with me, Lie with me” encapsulate some of Absolut’s most tried and true ingredients. His rare sense for building a compelling rhythmic section is illustrated one more time by an arpeggiated funky bassline and a powerful snare. The right percussion stabs and micro breaks effectively and relentlessly build up a powerful drive. A similar vocoded voice snippet as found in his former “get da funk outamyface”, on top of the bewitching eponymous “fly with me” sample, will surely hook you in, while the brief, delayed acid pads conspire to flavour more punchy rhythms . On top of that, the more than 1mn40 intro will make this track an instant favourite for a super funk filth-laden dj set starter.

Andre Absolut & V-Tunes - Boxrocker (Last Resort Mix)

Last on this release you will find a rework of “Boxrocker”, a piece co-written with partners in crime, the Swiss duo V-Tunes.
This new take differs from the 2006 edit by its analogue, galvanizing, pitch-shifting, arpegiatted bassline while an extra, unexpected, chorus-like soaring pad with a dash of electro-pop makes its harmonies resonate with reverbs until they hit some powerful chord strikes. Discreet but nonetheless precise percussion invigorates the original’s vocoded samples with a more catchy groove while the crescendo of the last break takes it to a crowd-pleasing and effective climax. Very nice complementary version to the more hard-rocking original.

Bottom line :
Rediscovering the talent of Absolut is so good! Congrats to Kumquat on taking such good care of his legacy : this is a highly recommended release! No doubt this rare musician was knighted by Georges Clinton himself, and has graduated from P-Funk University. The heated debates around today’s orientation of Progressive music reveal how much the thirst for a groovy, funky music is not quenched, and you sure will gulp this down, and will probably want more. Why not start a petition asking André to come back to writing dance floor music again?

The "Boxrocker" Remix is actually better than the Original one.
Can you belive that???

I got a question though: Is he really back??
Cause it's always a pleasure hearing his tunes.

I just hope so.

Regards!
