I want to start sending all my mixes through tape or something with a really nice saturation, a mixer even. Any suggestions? |

i wouldn't bother with tape for a start. it's a lot cheaper now then it used to be, but it's a huge hassle to setup+calibrate etc etc..
if you are just looking to saturate your signal or give it a more 'analogue' vibe, i would suggest running each track out through a really nice pre or very coloured compressor like a fatso or an api 2500 or neve compressor. |

At this point the Anamod ATS-1 and the Fatso are looking great! Ideally the ATS-1 I would aim for first, but its like $3600. The Fatso is about $2700. These are in Canadian Dollars. |

i would buy 2nd hand, i'm sure you could get the fatso for less then $2000 easy, and you would want the UBK mod version (the stock fatso would be cheaper). i'm sure you could make similiar savings on the Anamod if you bought that 2nd hand as well.
from what i've read of the anamod, it's the closest thing you'll get to the 'tape sound' without setting up a 2-track, but an ITB alternative i would suggest which is also very close is the Nebula plugin with the R2R expansion from cdsoundmasters. the best tape emulation you will get ITB, maybe worth checking out to see if you actually like the sound of tape? it's not for everyone.. i might also add that UAD has a fatso plugin, might be worth demoing that if you have UAD2 card.
personally i would go for a high end stereo compressor first because that way you are imparting a really nice analogue vibe on your mix if you run every individual track through it, plus obviously you can use to compress, individual tracks, groups + the 2 bus to get a phaat sound. |

I would simply find a good mastering suite with the above and save my self some cash for things that would help me get better mixes.
Unless I was thinking about taking up mastering tunes as a job.

sending through tape is the less expensive but it requires lot of patience... i would go for a di/preamp a eq or compressor .
fatso i don t like much the sound but i have limited experience (never used it , but i know few artists that use it on their tracks and it never impressed me much,it s a tape emu if i m right? seems like i will never be a fan of tape sound )
some dont like it, but for me the plastic sound of a distressor when used for coloring just work great on synths ,versatile,it s a great first compressor if you like that sound |
