Hi all! I'm feeling kind of stuck in my methods for making psy bass so I wanted to try making something akin to the basslines you find in these tracks:

(bass comes in at 1:46)

Are these saw waves still? My thought was that there was no sustain, slight decay and it was a slightly different alignment of filter decay/env/cutoff position than 'standard' psy bass...but after a couple of hours of tweaking I still can't seem to get anything close..

any tips? Using sylenth1 if it matters.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

Learning to synth the bass from scratch is one of the most essential things about psytrance....

Preset tweaking isn't going to cut it. Nor is it about the chorus or the EQ...I mean, that might have something to do with some extra sheen on top but the vast majority of the character and awesomeness of bass is the patch itself...

so that's what I'm looking for info on, some way to get close to this kind of thin/plucky/tight bass that sounds very different than the standard psy bass. It sounds more squarey than regular...like I thought a square mixed with a saw but then filtered down so you're only hearing a tiny bit of it??

Nope, when I do it...sounds too much like a square or I filter it down to where you can't really tell anymore :\            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

My guess is that it's all in the filter. Doesn't sound that special to me.. maybe turn down the filter envelope amount a bit from standard psy, also lower the cutoff freq. This will make the sound pluck, and keep it from having that nice filter attack that we all love so much           - Making Denmark a nastier place since 1974

Sounds like any out of the box bass but less filter envelope compared to other ragga dagga tracks I've heard. Go for 1 saw osc tweak filter envelope and cutoff. Then add sinus osc for better low end and mix accordingly. You can also experiment with adding another osc with square/triangle with low volume and try to get a bit of "plock" sound from it.

On the second track.
Not chorus...More like light touch of formant filter that ain't retrigering.

I used to experiment of puting fabfilter Volcano on my bass, there is present there called "alien talking" or some of this sort.
Made very similar result, bass was the simplest saw wave out of Alien 303,with some tweakage.

If you like ,I can dig the file and post the result to compare.
From all the things I lost, that sandwitch cost me most :)

u could try in surge.... and modulate the phase and/or the width of the oscilator...

i dont thik surge s the fattest to do basses but the oscilators come with nice modulations ...

the bass from the second video seems to be triggerin a phaser effect walkin in a ramp but if u put phasers in ur bass it ll prob destroy it unless u are a doing it layered...

in surge u could do that RAMP phase effect modulatin the PHASE slider from the oscilator...

im stuck with u on that bro..

when we do our basses from scratch it gets too "default" if u know what i mean..

so im tryin to create a bass that even POM will be happy to hear

Thanks for the response. That was my initial thinking as well, the filter cutoff just seems a bit lower than what I usually hear...but when I try to duplicate it or get near to it it just seems like there's not enough filter env in a not interesting way.

I guess I just didn't put enough time in to hit the sweet spot...gonna try again now and see what I can come up with.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

on the second one the bass have mouvment, sound like there is some resonance and some modulation with velocitie on filter and on resonance(lfo or velocite i would say),there is also some fx on it.

it sounds like more square wave then saw but i think it uses both though for the fact that it makes it sound a little more "full"? defiantly low pass filter. I think there might be some tweaking on the velocity of the notes of the bass itself. just a shot in the dark on my end! haha           http://soundcloud.com/brentmalik
