the book I found, and that I think is very usefull is a book called "how to write songs on keyboards" by Rikky Rooksby subtitled A complete course to help you write better songs.

heres a little bit from the preface of the book...

"It explains how to play chords with simple shapes, and how to get inspiring new sounds by altering these shapes on the basis of physical patterns rather than theory." speaking about the book of course.

I found this a much better way for me to actually learn some theory, because even though it teaches you these shapes instead of theory, you actually begin to learn theory just by doing it.

Some of the other things in the book are

How to make chords blend
How to make sad chords less sad
How to make minor chords threatening
How to make major chords sound exotic
How to make chords more Dramatic
How to make chords more Enigmatic
How to make chords breezier
How to make minor chords more tragic

it has little diagrams of the patterns on the a keyboard, sorta like guitar tablature for keyboards

I think it's been very helpful for me, so I thought I would suggest it for those people who have tried music theory but just never got themselves to do it.

Or if you're looking for an alternative route to learn some music theory.

It comes with a 90 track cd so you can hear the examples.

here's a link where you could buy it, it's 15 U.S. Dollars.

In my favourite psy tracks every single layer is interesting, including each percussion track, the bass, every little noise and the melodies. What I love about this style is each time you listen to a (good) track you can get something new out of it depending on what you choose to focus your attention on. You can focus on individual instruments, or you can focus on the "whole".[/quote]

Of course I can and do often focus consciously on different elements.

I think one weakness of trance is the independent layering of instruments. instead of introducing interaction between layers which makes the track sound much more pro, most of psy just introduces new leads which are compatible, instead of enhancing the previous ones in2 a larger picture.
what would b nice if if artists created their tracks in such a way that a full WOW melody would only b apparent when the layers are all present.
Possibly examples would b multiple basses working 2gethr, or multiple leads with a noisy ones etc. Not that this doesnt already happen, I just think it doesnt happen enuf.

Astral Projection's earlier albums often have great interaction between elements. Both ways - independent and interacting - have their place in music and a musician should use both.           When rain dries, clouds form.
