Hi guys! I'm looking for a very good hardware synth to make psytrance and electronic music. I wanna use my money (university degree) in a evergreen synth, i will buy a used synth and my choice is between access or clavia. I was thinking about access indigo I or II or C, ti desktop, ti polar and clavia NL3 or dave smith polyevolver. What do you think about these? I know are all good synth but i have many doubt. I need a synth for strange and powerfull sounds, somebody told me that access have more standard trance sounds that you can hear everywere now, clavia is more original and aggressive, is it true?
Please help me!
Thanks a lot! Bye |

All the synthesizers you mention are a good choice. I personally went for the TI Polar as the ability to integrate it into your sequencer as a plugin makes it really easy to work with.
I had a Virus Indigo before that, but it was a pain using all those midi & audio cables and recalling presets each time. The TI makes it really easy, all you need is one usb cable & you can use it like any other Vsti plugin.
However if you want to have some diversity in your sound you could go with a Indigo II & a Nord Lead 2X, this way you could have the best of both worlds.
You might also want to check out the Waldorf Blofeld, it's quite reasonably priced as well.
My two cents.

I got a Ti and am in love with it. Next synth is clavia for me, hands down, for those pulasting pad and ever so fabulous RAW dirty leads and not forgetting to mention the bass as well . Me, i think will prob go with a wave or 2X rather than the NL3 which is now discontinued. The wave i believe goes back to the same internal structuring/ similar build as the NL1 & 2 whereas the NL3 was completely new but apparently, who i heard from a few people, found it to be more digital and thinner sounding than the infamous NL1 and NL2. Although those flashing LED's on the NL3 are super cool as i always like to know where the parameters are when reviewing patches..
Unfortunately this was not incorporated into the WAVE and this also makes synthesis far more difficult if you are an amateur like me

the thing is, everybody has a nord lead and a virus. So if you get those, you will sound like everybody else. Flame away, y'all know it's true. |

That's like saying everyone uses guitars in rock music, so does that mean anyone who uses it is not original?
It's not about the tools, it's how you use them!

I say OpenSourceCode has a point. It is not like everyone having a guitar, it is like eerybody has a stratocaster, and nowadays they sound a lot the same. It does not have anything to do with lack of originality, this said, I would still love to own a virus TI....

its even worse than that. Its like everyone using the same guitar, with the same pickups, same efx boxes, same amp and all for the most part on the same setting.
Clavia's synths don't sound like Access synths and vice versa. There are amazing hardware synths though to be had outside these 2 companies that equally don't sound anything like either of them. People practically give them away on ebay too right now. just do some research.

if you are new to subtractive synthesis i would go for the nord instead of the virus because you have a knob for (nearly) every function which makes it imho way more comfortable than switching through sub menues like the virus....

of all the hardware synths I've used, which I'll be the first to admit is limited, the one that has stood out as different, interesting and downright great has to be the Alesis Andromeda. Properly nice sound when I road tested it!
Can get veeeery pricy though.

thanks a lot guys, very helpfull! now i make a stupid answer, i'm not a great producer and i just sold my microkorg, so, i'll have to learn synthesis (no problem about this), if you don't have money problem but you can choose only between clavia (NL2X, NL3, G2 modular) and access (virus B,C, ti) what will you choose to make melodic dark trance (like menog for example)?
Thanks a lot, hope understand my poor english |

Well firstly to say everyone who uses a virus or nord will sound the same is stupid. It's mopre about the fact that people are comfortable with their sounds and don;t want to change or push the synth to it's limits.
Secondly, Menog isn't really dark psy, it's more like the 3D vision sounds or Timecode, more of a harder full on sound. I'd say he probably uses Access, and also Vanguard plugin, but you can always find his email and ask him yourself to be sure.
I recently bought the Novation X Station and am having heaps of fun with it. It has more knobs and sliders than you can poke a stick at, has some really fun trancey sounds and some wicked pads and is perfect for using as a midi keyboard.
I also have paid but am waiting for it to arrive, a Virus TI Snow and a Moog Little Phatty Stage Edition as I liked the sounds (maybe for more progressive style stuff) and it was dirt cheap on sale, cheaper than the Snow... Virus TI from my playing over the last yera at a mate's studio is great for making really dark psy, like I'm talking Osom, Alien Mental, Furious type dark psy, not stuff like Menog. Plus it has new update out that is great for glitching and chopping up your track
Go play at a shop and just buy th eone you like... I spent like 6 hours in the store on the weekend playing with all types of synths before I chose... and I'm actually still going to consider grabbing the Nordlead 2x and maybe the Bloefeld early next year as well... but now that my cd collection is up todate it's time to become a synth whore haha
