« Today a couple millions artists try to reach a few hundred people. Or like the contemporary pun puts it, “In the future everyone will be world-famous for 15 people.” »
i am quoting this, because i think its really it, it says it all in simple direct words...
when i look to soundcloud i really think this article makes sense... it defines well how being an artist this days is like being a grit of sand on a beach, and how all the music no matter if original, how well produced is will be completly hard to reach stablishment...
please, if you have time to read and do disagre with anything about the article, let me known, becuase i think this topic can have a really nice discussion considering this.
i personaly hate soundcloud this days, i hate people who add others not becuase they want ear them, but they others just because they are expecting others to add them, just to climb the infamous path of stablishment... this is exacly where it starts the lack of hectics about people today and where it start the greediness about being a famous artist
i still think that, if people limit them selfs to just make their stuff and let the door open to anyone who admire it to enjoy it and be happy with it... it would be the right thing, instead of artists who are knocking doors all the time, searching for listeners...
soo lame, soo depressing
its like the a foking writter who sucks, but instead of sellingg his books on a library, he knocks all the doors like religious phanatic searching for people to his religion...
and this is more or less the behaviour of DJ/artists today, to everything, to promote their music, to get their gig´s...
everything is going so into the direction of being a grit of sand on a beach. |

Indeed a good article, read a similar one in german press yesterday but it was more general and not specifically about electronic stuff
Anyway, most of stuff thats said is true definitly but I would say that it maybe depends on the genre e.g in progressive I like to follow some people also over longer periods of time as long as they make good tracks but how did these people got my attetion? label releases ...I dont surf soundcloud to check new artist never heard before(well sometimes you stumble on good stuff by accident) because there are just to many, when a label releases something there maybe was some kind of quality check before
in techno etc. I just browse sites(decks.de e.g), related youtube videos and so on but the mass of music is even bigger there but of course there are some names and labels that I can check from time to time(also after the pre-2005 line, mention in the article) and they still release some good stuff( would be crazy to expect nice relases only, never in my entire life I found artists where over 60% of the tracks are tracks I like to listen to)
and I agree with the conclusion that you have to come up with something different to really stand out as most people do the well known stuff(Myself, I want to recreate those fat prog bass honestly but it's ok, when they work I try to set up different leads and samples(besides zaps, damn:D) to the once heard before/common ones)
In my town you can mostly listen to deep house/techno/minimal and some progressive parties but something like acid techno is so rare maybe once every 3 month there is some 1 or 2 dj's playing acid house or acid techno
so after all I wonder if people don't want to listen to other stuff, or there is no other stuff because people are afraid the audience won't like it
It's maybe some kind of vicious circle people are trapped in then, producers are afraid of new things, and the audience gets bored but dances along so it must be good stuff and the producer keep on going this way(oh I guess that's something the articles says?) |

In addition to my post I want to add a qoute from the comment section under the artcile
<<In my experience a few crew I know, myself included, have tried to step outside the norm. We don’t DJ because it was too far away from being musical and creative so we play Live Electronic music. But we have found that most peeps don’t want this because the structure is to alien from the typical DJ styles even though the music is familiar.
And no matter how often this Live style is pushed out there too many people just accept that it must sound like a DJ or it’s not right in some way. I have lost count of the amount of times I have had linters come up and request a track thinking that all the gear I am standing over is a DJ console. I have even had DJs come up and ask what model CD player the Korg ESX is!!
Frustrating…>>
I think can can also said about the overall sound at a party, Stefan said they want uniqe and different sounds but it could also be that people want to hear what they are used to and like it and here and there pops up a track that really stands out but is still within the boundaries of a typical sound
