guys- i need an advice: how is amd athion xp 1800? with gighbyte 7vkmls? what's better - sdram or ddram is their much of a different?

as i have heard generally AMD cpus are great.
gigabyte mobos are good too.
if u worry about compatibility & audio issues -
check out the sites of the manufacturer and see if
the mobo uses some old via chipset (with old buggy apollo chip) - i don't think they make anything with the old buggy ones.
about the SDRAM vs. DDRAM - DDR is double data rate... this means DDRAM is much faster, but since you do audio - most of your problems will be about how fast your Memory flushes pages into disk and from disk, this means that RAM speed won't be the bottle neck. if u have say 512Mb of memory,
and load many VSTi + effects (this is another issue - i have no idea what do u need the PC for - midi/audio/audio+midi, but this is invariant to what i say) , then you will need as fast disk as possible - since the Memory is much faster than any disk. this is the regular case.
if you were working entirely on RAM - (no swap file) themn you'd have to have 2G of RAM, and then it would be faster and better to work with DDRAM, which is still costier than normal SDRAM

generally DDRAM is actually DDR SDRAM,
it is an optimization of SDRAM technology which allows doubling of speed.
still normal SDRAM at 133Mhz allows ~ 1066Mb/s.
how much can IDE disk give ?
check the sites of disks (it's less)
what is faster than DDR SDRAM?
Rambus DRAM (RDRAM) - intel's invention.
allows more than DDR SDRAM, but it eats much more power (more heat) and is much more expensive, aside the fact that it doesn't mix with other RAMs - u cannot now have both DDR SDRAM with RDRAM.

about the bottle-neck of the music pc: afaik it s the pci-bus...u can have the hyper-speed cpu and rambus ram, whatever, but with a crappy bus u won t have good perfromance...
