Hi ppl
I think of buying a new computer and I wonder,
Due to the fact that AMD + DDR is currently the best performer in the PC field, is it usable for audio work?

there's a lot of stories about incompatibilities with AMD based platforms both softwere and hardware like (Certain audio cards) so I want to know - have you ever encountered with such problems?

All of the AMD problems with software/some hardware are due to motherboards with older VIA chipsets, most of the newer motherboards with a VIA chipset will run just fine, but if you want to be on the safe side get a motherboard with an AMD chipset and you'll be just fine.. also Steinberg just announced that they will now be programming their apps to take advantage of AMD processor functions, so if you use Cubase (why?  Logic is alot better) er excuse me.. if you use Cubase this will be a plus for you...

Thanks man!
What about AliMaGik1 or the forthcoming SIS?

So what you're basically saying is that with todays chipsets there are no compatibility problems?

P.S
Special functions.... ha!
who needs them anyway?! :)

basicly don't buy VIA chipset imo
there's AMD chipset mobos for AMD processors
and if you're planning on ddr memory which is quite best choice, choose a DDR ONLY mobo - which will give you the best ddr performance and compatibility and whatsoever...

btw, there were problems long time ago with AMD with K-5s and some K-6s but
today's K-7 Athlons are just fine

IMHO, you should defiantly buy an AMD based Computer for the following reasons:

*AMD processors are great if you choose to work with echo audio sound cards, as oppose to Digidesign sound cards, which aren't compatible with AMD processors at all.

*On the software side, i've used Cubase, Logic, Reaktor and Reason on an AMD based CPU (1 Ghz), and everything worked perfectly fine (with quite admirable performance actually).

Mike you should check the M-Audio site.
There is no problem whatsoever with Maudio soundcards runing on AMD machines... That's just the reason why I want an AMD sooner!

Guys, What is the real difference between AMD & Intel?

is it the name only?

It's still 1000 MHZ on both sides so why pay more to Intel?

There are alot of differences in the way each of them handle data in the pipelines and how many pipelines each have, what extra instruction sets are built into them, the way they handle branch prediction.. the only thing they really have in common is that they are based on an x86 instruction set and share a few features like MMX.
MHz doesn't really mean a whole lot.. I mean.. a 1.4GHz Pentium IV can slow down to the speed of a Pentium 233 MMX doing certain calculations, and a 450MHz G4 is just as fast as 1GHz+ Intel/AMD..

Mr.Man you can read about it in

anyway the bottom line is that an AMD Athlon 1.4 DDR can easily beat up an Intel P4 1.7/1.8 RDRAM.
and he can do that  from many reasons, starting from differences in the core structure, up to improved bus speeds and DDR support... (DDR-SDRAM can show about 30% !!! improvement in performance.)

AMD RULEZ !
once upon a time the soft was written and compiled for intel with its special assembly, but now, when AMD is Intel competitor by all rights - all the software is running 100%
the MB for AMD do not have the old VIA chipsets, so you can buy any new board without a fear.
and besides all this AMD is cheaper.
my next pcbox will be amd based.
