INTEL!

1-long lasting
2-good 3-year full garantee
3-sure it's a bit more expensive, but more reliable

I suggest a 3 or 3.2ghz..pick up the last version.
Do not overclock it, it'll just bring problems and make your garantee void

'njoy making music =)

AMD and Intel will both give you what you need, although the consensus is that the latest generation of AMD chips beats Intel for floating-point maths, which is most of what is involved with making music. Both chips should be equally long-lasting and reliable.

Overclocking can be done without problems - I have overclocked my AMD XP2400+ to 2600 for the past 18 months with no problems. Just make sure you have appropriate cooling for your CPU.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

i completely agree with colin... the new amd processors have a much better instruction set and architecture to handle floating point maths, which is used extensively in music as well as 3D-games. It is less reliable and it runs a lot warmer, but u can easily solve that by adding a powerfull cooler to get the temperature down, electronic equipment is much more reliable when running at low temperatures... a good zalman pipe-cooling device with speedstep fan should do it more then adequately.

But sometimes I hear an opinion that AMD is more suitable for 3D games and P4 is better for music processing. I choose between Athlon 64 3000+ (or 3200+) and LGA 775 P4 3.0 Ghz. I'm not sure about AMD because the real frequency of 3000 is only 1,8 GHz. I heard that AMD rating name is eqal to P4 frequency but not 100% sure. Wanna change my CPU for being able to process audio tracks with VST effects and to use some VSTi.

AMD rating name is close enough equal to P4 frequency that it makes no difference. Latest AMD processors have better reliability and run much cooler than earlier models. AMD has slightly better floating-point maths than Intel (and is therefore slightly better for music than Intel) but really, it makes no difference these days in terms of power - both brands are equally good for both games and music.

The main difference these days is in price, and here AMD beats the shit out of Intel.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

I agree with trip-. Both are very good - some people say Intel is best, some say AMD are the best.

I got a AMD and it rocks. A good friend got a Intel and it rocks. So just get what u want.

Maybe u want a special mobo, then this makes ur decision, check the hardware u want to use in ur computer and ask for compatiblity with AMD and Intel cpus.

U can't do something wrong            Signature

AMD is more cheap than INTEL. I think to buy AMD. And i'll buy a motherboard who supports both chips.(?)           Trance Sound As A Medium Towards Mystical Experience...

Hehe, thats not possible mate (a board wich supports both chips)

Anyways. I run an AMD 3500+HT, and it works perfectly. I've had this discussion between friends many times, and we came to a conclusion that AMD is way better price/performance for sure. Many are also convinced that AMD's 939 socket is the best choice (ofcourse if you have the money for a FX55 or Intel Extreme whatever, go for it).

I agree with Colin OOOD.

I have extensive experience with both Intel and AMD, and both work fine.

But I have made some benchmarks with floating point stuff and usually AMDs with lower clock easily beats Intel's processors.

Also AMD's chip number (like AMD Athlon XP 2400+) don't mean the clock of this processor is 2400 ( in fact, it's less than 2000), but still it beats most Intel chips running at 2400...

AMD is cheaper and very reliable. Would go for AMD (but if money is not an issue, you can go for Intel as well).

Just make sure you have an efficient cooling system (for AMD and Intel).

I also overclocked both (Intel and AMD, and even overclocked some Nvidia video boards) and a mild overclock is usually safe (as long as you got enough coolers). But IMO overclock is not worth, the gain is not that much (unless your machine is really slow, which is not the case these days).
