Electro, years ago I could ONLY hear trance. I didnt like ambient at all, and didnt even try and wanted to listen to any other genre of music at all.
slowly it started to affect me and by now I can tell you that I hear at home much more ambient stuff than trance.
trance is great. that feeling of getting "into trance" that makes your skin shiver. yeah, I like that too! but there's a point your brain is getting toooo tired to get into this same feeling. after hearing way too much the same usual boom tss boom tss at 4x4 patterns..
that's what psy-ambient gives - the same electrifing feeling but just softer. or pure chillout for total relaxation..
what I do like most in ambient is unlike trance - ppl try to innovate and keep failing. no one does what hasn't been done before. :(
while in ambient there're no certain rules. it's more free and much more full of surprises!
for some good examples check out my top10 ambient tracks (posted in the top10 section): 1. Azure Taint - Glasrauch (Electrolux) 2. Ishq - Sol (Interchill) 3. Noodreem - Cosmic Jam (LSD) 4. Jaia - Le Chant Des Sirenes (Dakini) 5. Something Wonderful - Liquid Dog (Solstice) 6. Gus Till - Bermuda (Flying Rhino) 7. Angel Tears - For Rebeka (MP) 8. Mouse on Mars - Catching Butterflies With Hands (Sonig) 9. 4D - Slivva (Flying Rhino) 10. Makyo - Suzho River (Uplink)

Hey man, how about that "red seal" track on flying rhino's "time re:evolution""? (forgot which number). If you are new to ambient and don't like it, then you should give astral's stuff a try,
BOM!! |

You should listen to some Leftfield stuff. Thats more Tip Hop tho, but it's still great music.

massive attack are virtually the INVENTORS of trip hop... and i love that whole bristol sound, massive attack, tricky, portishead.. as well as all the bristol trance scene. trip hop like this is wicked to chill to, but i wouldnt really have described it as ambient
check out fridge, their stuff is pretty cool, if you want ambient, but stuff thats got melody and beast as well, also king of woolworths.. thats sort of more upbeat, but not really trip hop.... it has less commerciall appeal than that sort of trip hop |

Trip Hop and Dub are two styles which I define as "chillout lights", but doesn't mean you can't chill out to them. |

you can definitely chill out to them... but at the same time its music that works on another level of having more commercial appeal, because its largely song based.... and you dont just have to be stoned to REALLY dig it (to its fullest level) because maybe it works on more than one level
but for me , good chill out music is anonymous, when your not really concentrating on the music, more on having a good time woth your friends.. thats why i like stuff like fridge |

try JFC - The Cage I don't remember the name of the album but its third track on it. I really love this band. This isn't psy ambient but it is rather relaxing. |

If you want some power in your chillout music, well, FSOL - Dead Cities (except tracks 1 and 4 which aren't chillout at all).
Very psychedelic, very dark at times... and brilliant music too :) |

surely one of the most ambient albums around at the moment is the raja ram project called "12" a twelve part ambient journey into inner space |
