I was also going to mention Cliff Martinez, but for his work in Traffic (one of my fav movies of all time).
Harold Budd did a soundtrack for a movie called "Mysterious Skin", but I've haven't seen it.
And although he's not so much "ambient" per se (he does have a strong electronic influence however), I'm quite a fan of Clint Mansell's work, especially his work for Darren Aronofsky's movies (Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain). |

i was watching 'Prison break' season 1 recently and was surprised to hear some ulrich schnauss playing in the background when the lead character is shown back in time with his father... i think the track was monday paracetamol.
