Sounds great, especially when you're high.

Everything sounds better thru reverb and delay.

Slow modulations.

Warmth. Or iciness. Perhaps a study in contrasts?

Are you talking about ambient or ambient

In my book ambient is beatless, evolving soundscapes.

And ambient is more or less a misinterpetation of chill-out,downbeat and similar definitions.

Because if you are talking about ambient you realy dont have to worry about structure or bpm.

But i think anything goes into making music for relaxation as long as you do the obvious, music that will help you relax.

imho - ambient gives much more freedom for producer, than psytrance. the range of this style is wider...           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

Nicely put, but my opinions differ from yours on the relaxation part. You can design ambient music intended to do the opposite... as in, cause nervousness, uncomfortability, wariness, fright, and numerous other emotions and reactions. For example, the sort of music surrounding undefined horrors or tense moments before the door gets opened in horror movies, or more popularly today, the background music of the show LOST. Gradual, subtle transitions from one mood to the other are one of the things I love about this sort of music the most, hand-in-hand with the "anything goes" aspect of it that gives this sort of music its beauty

My advice to the OP would be to research and listen to a lot of ambient music, spend some time each day paying attention to and appreciating the sounds around him/her, wherever they happen to find themselves, collect sounds and samples from whatever sources you can, of whatever you can, and read up on music theory and how notes, tones, and chords can be manipulated to influence mood. And then experiment with your own idea on how you can apply that information to creating his/her music.

Also, check out those often-neglected Miscellaneous sections of music stores... oftentimes I've found that some of the best sample material from CDs in those corner sections that otherwise wouldn't find a home!
