You can use plug-ins for any genre of music.

Zebra2, Surge, Albino3, Sylenth, etc. I really like Zebra2's filters though.

I've used those to create psy, prog and chill.          http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

I don't really use albino much, but I think the filters sound really warm so I use it for chillout.           www.musicproductionnatural.com || www.facebook.com/djamoeba | facebook page

anything really....
You need to listen to some chillout and ambient maybe to get some inspiration...

its not difficult at all but really you need some basic understanding of music theory...
But you can build ambient in just one tone..
to make it more interesting add some notes from the scale of that tone, or just experiment...

start with a pad sound, to make even more interesting layer 3 sounds, like a pad and some Alien sound, and a piano, or a classical guitar... its alot about layering and adding small details...

dont forget to add reverb to the piano/guitar and Alien sound.. also some delay

A alien sound you make with some Fm, a little noise and some chorus, maybe a little flanger also.... make it like a pad sound, with high attack long decay and release(experiment)

easy is if you start with some presets on some synth you like...

Some Vsti
V-station
Korg Wavestation
Renegade
FreeAlpha
Texture
Waldorf PPG wave

Some Vst FX

Tal Dub delay 1 and 2
Dblue Glitch
Omniverb
Nyquist EQ
Stillwell Audio plugins...

Good luck
