seriously, I can't even stand to listen to "modern" psytrance at this point because the production is just such UTTER SHIT.
A great reference to contrast modern psy production with is to get the album Orblivion by The Orb. The most lush, beautiful sounds jump out of the speakers, you can hear every nook and crany...all in a lush orchestra of pure, weird, sounds..
While every single "modern" psy album sounds like a wanker punching you in the face with a 16th note machine gun at 145bpm...and a pocket full of pirated waves plugins they stole for free. Or maybe things get "really" creative and the "machine gun" adds some syncopation..
Fuck that...
This is a thread about how to create the sounds and production values you hear on Orblivion...
Please don't respond with philosophical nonsense about what I posted above..and please don't respond to anyone that does in this thread...
"If you don't like the taste of the recipe I'm cooking up then don't even bother trying the finished dish"...

To anyone that is still here lets get down to the science of Orblivion...
I assume it first must start with the mixer...
I don't pretend to know the answer to this question but digital vs analog mixer..hmmm..
Even though since people are generally stupid and an analog mixer is "always" better than a digital mixer, is the sound on Orblivion from a digital mixer and the coloring from its DAC or the sound of an analog mixer..
I'm not sure yet...
to be continued.

Braininavat - is orblivion psy? The orb Iv heard is more like chillout or downtempo. Definitely not dance music.

And the techniques possible in chillout tend to be inappropriate (slow) for dance music. Long airy luscious pads tend to make the dancer languish, whereas the exact opposite, short stabby repetitve sounds, tend to make dancers jumpy and trancey.

Music may be an unlimited art, but each mood has a limited palette of appropriate techniques to transmit that mood. A trance producer can decide to make different parts of his track have different moods, but then he has to (well "has to" only if he actually wants to succeed) apply the appropriate tools for the right effect.

That said Im all for interesting contrasts of energy in tracks, however, its also up to the DJ, who might not understand that the dancers need contrast, from a good selection of tracks that have different levels of energy and contrast in an overall plan.

On another note - I think the biggest problem is that it doesnt pay to invest your time into making psy...

I am quite happy people don't produce a similar way as the orb.. because the orb often sounds pretty damn bad. Not sure if it is the mastering or the production. But there are quite a few things that could be tidied up in the orbs albums.

Of course, the orb. Those very well known psy producers.

I love "the blue room". Best twisted full on psychedelic trance I ever damn well heard.

Seriously though have the orb produced some psy trance? If they did I would be interested in hearing it.

And I quite like modern psy production, as long as I can hear shades and everything isn't so in my face. I am a sucker for a nice, sharp kick though

If you don't like it, don't listen.

If you don't like it, make your own.

Chose one or both. There is plenty of good music out there, why focus on the stuff you don't like?           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

I very much doubt anyone here has any concrete info on the precise equipment and techniques used in creating Orblivion, although it's safe to say that the production was probably done on equipment very few people indeed on here could afford, and by people at the top of their game in the music industy as a whole, let alone the sliver of it that is the psytrance scene with its... er, how shall I put it... 'wide range of abilities'. Anyway if the thread continues as the OP wants, the 99.9% thing that can come out of it is speculation, unless the guy who mixed it posts here to tell us how he did it. Which is unlikely because he died in June.

For the record I think the Orb went downhill after Kris Weston [left/got kicked out for behaving like an actual band member rather than a hired engineer].           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

personally, i love the direction the scene is taking.
don't fight the future man, just go with it.
do things your way and let other do what they want.
just think of it as your chance to shine amoung us "lesser" producers.

i personally and obsessed with the ajja, yabyumish dark (but not neuro), twisted pleasure sound.

nice one wizack (: .

i thiink what braininavat might hate so much is the new Genres of Psytrance, people say they just make PSYTRANCE, but reality is there are more to that fact,

for Fullon:

Morning (Normally about 140-145 bpm) And basicly more confortable to play in the morning. - Mellower beats than normal
High Tech (Normally about 142-145 bpm) better to play in the afternoon - More electric Beats
Night (Normally about 145-150 bpm) better to play at night - Faster Tempo for a Kickass Night

There is

Dark (Normally about 145-160 bpm)psychedelic delight where the beats enter your brain without permission
NeoPsytrance (i have no idea)
DownTempo (Generally just Slow Psytrance) a confortable genre to play after 10 hours of Rush, to calm down the brain

and some others out there

i dont worry about that too much. i make what peeps like and what i feel contortable doing.

This is what i BELEVE is pissing this man off so bad

It's all about cross pollinating subgenres in your music so djs get into fights about naming it.
