An alternative to what?
Is anything alternative to the other?

in belgium 'alternative' is more like subculture within the mainculture.
mostly everything that is not commercial,
how typical,
the word says nothing to me over here...

niche , diffrent than the rest , `underground` etc .. basically diffrent than popular culture .. i guess .. so yeah .. crazy psytrance is in a sense alternative .. but its more a lifestyle thing imo .. and it rox

Alternative to the mainstream.
Its a paradox, the illusion of alternative music, which is in fact not alternative music, but just an alternative market segment open for business ;-) Suits the person who is trying to live up to his "alternative image", consciously trying to be unique.
While listening to music, true alternative music is all the music your not listening to at the moment.

agree to an extent.
imo alternative is the name given to that kind of music that cant be defined to fit another genre or sub genre.
