beh

I know this thread is intended to help people get started but lets move it forwards people, don't just try and make music that sounds like everyone else. Please. If you haven't got anything to say from your heart with your music, don't say anything.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

hi colin
i post it just because to get ur own style u have to know the scene and others work
i didnt say make the same track, but use ur own sound on others structure...
i think its the best way to get into the psy realm or anyother and from there to do ur own style... nothing is wrong with that
and if u have personally problem with that, so guys dont make it on collin tracks use other less known artist such as GMS! INFECTED MUSHROOM! Or even Stas (vibe tribe) awesome tracks... yes i know they r not hot like collin but it will do the job
other then that evolve and try to make ur own style... but remember like anything in this life ... music have a pattern use it!!           HUGE BIG BLUE-MARVEL THAT WE LIVE ON

assaf_zo now u try to make a fool of colin, i think this is not ok, he just stated his opinion.

I think about stealing the arrangment/structure from a track like colin. I don't think u shouldn't do this.
Use ur creativity and try to make a structure that u love to hear, u may fail some times but after trying a while u will get ur OWN idea how ur music should be.            Signature

its a simple fact that without experience you wont make a commercial standard track, if thats what you want to do...

by copying structure you wont learn more than that there are 100000000000000 ways to make a track. and structure is something even a person that dont play any instrument or work with music can do, sometimes even better.

just learn music and learn about your self and learn how to express your self... and here is the hunch, you can express your self with/through other peoples music, but the ultimate thing is to be the innovator.

there are lots of tracks that has been the ground to something completely different, a good thing is to know that and take notice of it.

and i agree with colin allthough i expand on it,
-let your hearth and soul and body be the instrument. it occurs to me often when i programm music... its much more fun to be apart of it with your body, more satisfaction in my opinion.

Seems like a bit of a wasted topic to me. Telling people to take a track they like and emulate it.. sure, all music comes from the evolving of other forms you appreciate, but thats just common sense.

I think the 'learning your tools' process is far more important than learning to copy. I can't wait until I've got the skill to put piano, guitar, bongos and crazy synth leads into my tracks.. go nuts, be inventive, say what you want to say through your music!

Don't pigeon hole yourself to someone elses style!

i dont think it is a bad advice, just a very boring one to follow

i've tryed to do so sometimes but got so boring that could make more than 1min without giving up.

we should take into account that in the history of "music learning" its common to start by playing other people music, than starting to make our own :/

but if it is an exercise from wich you think you'll learn, you should do it

to some level,we never learn anything alone, but always from others

If you are having trouble with song structure, you could load a track you like and set markers at the different important sections. After that you can just delete the track while keeping the markers as indications of a song structure that works without copying any of the actual music.

If you're having trouble with structure, listen to where you are at the moment. Think of a direction to go in thats different in some way. Then do what you have to do to get there!

The reason people have trouble with structure is because they never gave it real thought.

If you know trance then you know how it makes you feel. Now make yourself feel it! "I can't" is just the easy way out.

Every great acheivement starts with a vision.

Yeah it's gotta be said, the flood of total hacks out there just releasing anything and everything as quickly as they can, with a quantity over quality attitude, is surely creating a high noise environment which is manking it harder to locate good artists. Funny how it correlates with warez'd VSTis coming of age, because if someone is too lazy to go to a shop and drop $1500 on a synth, they are probably too lazy to learn how to make good tracks before seeking to glorify themselves and get attention.

The best thing you can do if you are interested in trance or any sort of music is to experiement and ask yourself honestly if you LOVE the act of experimenting and writing, if so, then take 5 years to just fuck around, and THEN put something out.

There are no tips you can give to people who want to exploit music and everything it stands for just to glorify themselves (not saying that's you.) Now if copying other people is fun, then do it, and enjoy it, and don't worry about originality. But be honest and realistic about whether or not what you're making is worthy of release. Because most CDs I am handed these days are crap. People need to develop some critical perspective and overcome their blind view of themselves as infallible. Humility and self-critique improves people, err on the side of neurosis.
