Times are changing! I would much rather give my business directly to the label or artist rather than fool around with a middle-man online store. Too much hassle from them, but i don't buy CD's ever, so all too often i'm forced to deal with them.

thoughts?

It's not so easy...yet.

some labels are going that way - and carrying catalogue from other labels too. I'm glad to be working with them and happy to share profits with them.

last fm now offers buy links for artists

beatport player allows artists and labels to offer their catalogues

the challenge to do it yourself is to create a shop / back end that can cope with many many small transactions. investing in this and also the space / bandwidth is a pre-requisite. then you need to drive enough traffic to the site in order to make it all worthwhile

chaishop sam was offering a solution along these lines...

I have personally felt that it is best to work with shops that attract the most browsers. digital is a numbers game - the more people who see a release, the more sales it gets. simple.

so our strategy is to maximise the number of services that sell our releases - from subscription services like emusic, to industry standard iTunes , to niche services like Beatport / Cyberset / Ambient US + others that will add extra value and filter.

the key is that you're able to find what you want in the format that suits you for a fair price

I find beatport to be incredibly terrible, in that it costs more than a CD would cost to get an album of wavs.

Something is telling me once cds become obsolete all those digital sellers will jack up prices even more ....           http://www.chillumafia.com

i think you'll continue to see a spread ... for people not to want to copy they need to have a viable option to get the music at a fair price.

agreed beatport is too expensive - still many people choose to buy there.

most are not buying full cd's though

and when you buy at online you don't have to travel, park a car, take time out of your day to visit stores... so there are obvious savings in buying online

some places offer good value, and some new services yet to be launched will be well placed to satisfy the wav market at more reasonable prices

Doing it, just patiently awaiting more support. Either my music isn't worth it (which I can entirely understand) or people just aren't compelled to "buy" music much anymore, no matter which way you do it, when free downloads are available through torrent sites.

Yes, I offered free download of the tracks as
as unmastered 160kbps MP3 awhile back as a gift to fans and followers of this music. But I'm selling them now as mastered .WAV files. There is a difference. People have mostly been expected to pay for "uncompressed", mastered music in past conventional music selling models. I'm trying to offer this quality the most direct and digital way I can. When people buy the EP from me, they are supporting me in the most direct fashion possible. I run my own ftp and take care of each "order" personally, so there is no "cut" for anyone in between the supporter and the producer.

Ah well, it doesn't matter eitherway. Keep it hi-fi.

Peace,
-Tyler

all the more reason to support, IMO

I downloaded the 'free' tracks tyler graciously contributed to the community, but I also paid for the 'full spectrum' version for myself and a friend once available. (and let me say it was well worth it!

Supporting artists directly is one of the best ways to show appreciation. Think about how much time, effort and love these artists are putting into their art. Isn't that worth a few bucks? For me it definitely is. I will gladly pay directly to artists I love.

I also praise the labels for bringing good music to our attention, I don't forsee them becoming obsolete anytime soon. How many of us have made good music discoveries by finding tracks on a compilation? they are performing a valuable service and deserve respect too.
