Hello everyone. I'm working on writing my album, and I am interested in making it into one continuous arrangement - that is, with no pauses between the tracks, and the music flows from one to another.
I use Cubase, and as many know, tracks are typically arranged in their individual project files. I was curious to learn what techniques others who came before me have used to seamlessly combine their projects, and also how this affects the mastering/post production process.
Please share your tips/ideas

i obviously don't have experience of doing it myself. but by listening to albums done this way, it seems like all the tracks can be imported into one project and arranged in order with some parts overlapping to glue them together. so before bouncing your tracks, you should chose some sound or group of sounds that will be used to overlap this track with the following. then you'd bounch this separately and mute it in the original track. bounce that. then import everything into the master project. use tempo markers/tracks to align everything so it's on the grid (unless all of your tracks are of the same tempo ). or instead of re-using parts of the tracks that you already wrote, maybe you can work on the master projects as its own thing and come up with new things that were not in your original arrangements to glue things together, while you are looking at the whole album as one complete piece and going with your feelings in that moment.

I've also wondered about this often, what I've done when writing live sets is ending off one track with a variation of the main bassline from the next one. Ending off a track with an uplifter, starting tracks without an intro but straight into the kick-in creating some commonly occurring sound effects to lay over the cross over point also works (think of that sound of water dripping in Cosma's Simplicity that was present in the beginning of almost every track.)
When you import the bounces of tracks written this way into Cubase, they should flow from one another quite nicely. |
