Album or compilation?

Just curious do you prefer an album or compilation?

Personally for years I've been a compilation kind of person, but I'm finding more often recent releases you're lucky to get 20-30% that's good so I prefer to get albums of artists that I really enjoy.

Only compilations for me now are the small amount of classic Goa\Psy being remastered and reissued. I do hope that at some point these labels beyond Suntrip& DAT might get the rights to reissue some actual artist albums/compilatikns of old tracks from back in the day. I'm sure many of them have enough material.           Cuntus Maximus.

Let's assume for a minute that we really don't need any more goa / psy "greatest hits" compilations (including DAT, Zion 604, etc).

In that case, I think compilations work best for new producers, EPs are sort of a middle step, and albums work best for more experienced, established producers.

Compilations give new producers the opportunity to focus on compositional and production skills development for only a few tracks rather than trying to come up with enough (weaker) material to fill an EP or album. However, compilations are frequently a mixed bag with respect to overall musical coherence or consistent quality across all contributors. Hence, great compilations are few and far between, and most of us don't have enough time to sift through all the rest to find the hidden gems.

With more established producers you already have a pretty good idea of their style and quality, so EPs and albums are a better bet for stronger compositions and overall coherence.

Compilations provide a frequently inefficient way to identify new talent. EPs and albums help us appreciate the best of the current artists.

99,999% (for 18 years now) I'm interested only in albums by selected artists. Tbh I have a kind of allergy against those thousands of va's but there definetly are some great ones - espesically those old ones           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

EPs, LPs, VAs and Albums came from the limitations of physical media... what we need are more good songs, longer tracks, more music-videos and less stuff published just for the heck of it.

To answer the question ... Albums, because the creative direction is focused, gives more of an opportunity to create a solid concept which to me is the basis of a good record. Much harder to do with a VA, though it's sometimes even better when concept and variety come together.

Dark Prisma IMO have been the pinnacle of concept VAs for me in the last few years.

Mostly when it comes to VAs I just have the Tantrance, Goa-Head & Pulse classics out.           Cuntus Maximus.

If you as an artist do not have the skill to make an album then maybe it's time to quit or never start.           www.beatagency.dk

The thread is about what you the punter prefers, compilation or album. Nothing to do whatsoever as to whether a sound crafter can make an album or not.           Cuntus Maximus.
