Hey, questions for the established artists out there....
assuming you don't design your own album art, what kind of deal do you usually strike up with the artist? Do you give them a percentage of the album's earnings, or do you just pay a flat fee to use the image? just curious what, if any, the standard arrangement is here.

i designed mine myself, and got exactly the album art i wanted to go with the music 
but on topic,
hmm, percentage from the album sales, i dont think that many designers would go for this. number of reasons for this, but ill say the bigest one
-maybe its a small quantity of cds. (wich usually is in psytrance)

From what I've heard, its usually a flat fee as I doubt the album art artist would want to pay the music producer in order to use their art (which they would end up doing if the deal was they get a % of the album sales LOL)

I really wish I could draw or design well enough to do this task myself.
I once commissioned a drawing for a promo CD for 50 bucks, which was well worth it, but getting art for something I'm selling is a totally different game. I'm thinking of going with a royalty free stock image just to keep the cost down even though the idea of that really doesn't sit well with me.
I'm just planning to release a single to see how it goes and this image is just going to be a blip somewhere and an avatar on itunes. For this reason, I'm having trouble justifying the cost for an artist to do something for me...if i was doing a whole 10 track album or printing cd's I could see doing it, but with a digital single, the art would be more than 50% of the cost.
Have any of you guys used stock images in this way? Pretty lame, I agree, but whats the alternative for an independent musician with no design skills?

there might be some talented designers lurking these forums who might be willing to do this pro bono in exchange for a bit of publicity .. worth a shot , try the trance art section man , g'luck

i tried myself on few but have to say i dont have that time besides cause a cover can quite take me some while ^^. anyways there are a lot of guys n ppl out there one could talk to. there are a lot of painters i.e. like neil gibson, fluorobotanics etc. one could ask for permission to use one of their works to design a unique cover with it, which will be much less time for sure.
next to that there are ppl like swaroop, melan wastage or 7passages/luvart and sure many more, who will be pleased to have a further talk about it, i know that ^^
at the end one shold think about what the artist´s work is worth to you. if that suits the artists opinion one will find solution. depending on the situation usually one pays a fee for the use.
also one should check all these cool forums like at deviantArt or lsdex. they´re more than worthy to mention here imao, and usually i talk to ppl there still keeping the foot on the ground while doin more than amazing artwork, weither digital or painted. i found really massive stuff there. anyways im more interested in how it´s done ^^

Even tough i dont have any experience doing psytrance album covers,I would really enjoy doing one or two in exchange for a little bit of your knowledge regarding psytrance music prodution

i had an amazing app on the iphone that symetrixed a picture, therefore creating a reverse of the other picture, i was doping it with trees, some of the mystical shit that was reveling to me was outa this worls, i then transfered the images to photoshop to bring out the consealed image, eg i revesed the image of a galaxy and created and eygptian space buddah! lol
