So, I've got my first gig that I have to fly for, and I'm getting everything together.
My live setup consists of: Laptop, little MIDI controller, 8-channel Mixing board and MOTU Ultralight. So my question is for you guys who have flown with gear before, should I carry it all with me on the plane, or will they not let me get away with that? I mean, there's lots of metal and cables and such, but I could definitely get it into the overhead bins. I'm just afraid they're gonna think it's some kind of explosive or something (that ultralight could be anything!) and harass me. But on the other hand, if i check it and they lose my baggage, I'm totally fuck-nutted. Any thoughts? How do you guys do it?
Also, does anyone have any other random advice on the subject of traveling for shows(stuff you wish you had brought to your first long distance gig, travel tips, etc etc?)???
thanks!

If you crash i dont matter were you have your gear!
Always bring a Spliff and some muscle relaxing and anxiety dampening pills...
ohh and a bottle of wiskey!
Always promt that you as a mega rockstar should sit in the cockpit with the pilots!

u can bubble wrap the mixing board along with the cables and check it in ....
the rest u can carry with you ...
In the unlikely situation of the airlines loosing ur luggage (ive travelled a lot , and this has never happened with me) u can always claim insurance.
best of luck with your gig

ohh and if you are smart you can smuggle drugs in your gear!
if they find it you can say that this synth is made of hash and its the main component to get the wierd sounds..
if you pack your gear wise you can put it with normal luggage.. but i think most would prefere to have their gear close by.. i mean if the plane crash you always hug your synth...

In my experience you can carry a laptop bag (as long as it's used solely for a laptop and associated kit, eg. soundcard), a musical instrument (that will fit into the overhead lockers) and your own carry-on luggage. Put your Ultralight into the laptop bag, get a soft bag for the controller keyboard, get the promoter to hire a mixer, and you won't have any problems.
Be prepared to have to unpack and repack everything at security though I'm getting to know the security staff at Heathrow quite well now.

They've already told me that they have one for me...I'm just crazy paranoid like that
I do live dub reggae, so the mixing board is my main "instrument." If anything goes wrong, I can't perform without one! So i thought I would just bring it along, just in case. Better safe than sorry. And it's just a little mixer. Only 8 channels...
Anyone have any thoughts on that? Am I being TOO paranoid? |

Thanks, everyone!
I guess I'll just wing it without the mixer. My spine will thank me, at the very least.
And if it all goes to hell, I'll just "DJ" some mp3s off my ipod and dance around a bunch! HAW! |

if u ever come to israel prepare for massive scuirity check.. they sometime actualy will ask to operate the laptop , connect the soundcard and play a song for them. not to mention they possibly open screw's to check that its not a bomb and can make damage... not often , and as long u make the interview allright its usualy ok. remember: nobody gave u anything to pass..

wow ! can't they just x-ray it , I would rather do that then actually unscrew my laptop. I mean it really seems excessive.
