I really love any type of world fusion artists, but I don't recall hearing much that is fairly to mostly African influenced. Don't get me wrong, I still live for crunchy Indian mantras, or tangy South American flavor....but I'd really like to hear some nasty African tribal rhythms with soulful chants that enter through your ears and launch you into a psychedelic journey!

......any recommendations?

LOTUS BLOSSOM featuring Greg Hunter & Pop Mohammed on MELT2000 (2005)...a gentle exploration into african ambient and afro jazz

also pops mohammed has released some amazing electro ethnic stuff such as "...how far have we come?"

also check out for Kalahari Surfers 'akasic record' which has a fair bit Khiosan african samples influences, with african dub..

I know what you mean - there does appear to be very little... I was thinking of asking the very same question as I play quite bit of afrobeat in my up beat sets - so would be nice to have more downtempo afro inspired stuff..

There's a great Adham Shaikh(sp?) track on the new Interchill Gathering of the Tribes comp that very african infuenced.

Also check out Blissful Virtous who come from the same city as me and released a great album

and finally (sad that this reply is so short) - the Afromelt cd has afew good chilled tracks - including a great dubby remix of Lady Smith Black Mambazo

But any other suggestions would be most welcome

Thanks for the tips Elektric Sheep -will look into them. I'm generally fine with where to buy African music in its various guises - but was more curious as to Western style chill/ambient with African influences or electronic remixes of African stuff.

(apologies for the generic use of "African" to cover the wide & incredibly varied music of a whole continent..)

I've got the cd with Bill Laswell - but would have thought of it as more arabic influenced than african???
