Good evening everyone !
I'm considering acquiring a studio mixer, and I must admit that I'm a bit lost.
What kind of specs should I look for ?
Can I get something decent for, say, 600 dollars (XLR connectivity would be a ++, I won't use any mics, but the possibility to plug in a guitar would also be a nice thing, but not essential) ?
Thanks for your help (again, I might add ) ! |

Don't mean to be too blunt but what do you need a mixer for ? are you gonna use it for multiple synths (as you are not using mics) or are you planning to use it as analoge mixing front for your DAW ? |

That's not blunt, I'm still thinking about if I really need one.
At the moment, I have one Virus TI (that I use as a soundcard) and one Blofeld that is plugged in the input of the Virus.
I'll soon receive one DR-880 and one Moog LP, so in order to avoid juggling with the cables each time I want to use a specific device (not to mention not being able to use them all at once, as the Virus as only one input), I thought about getting a studio mixer.
I guess I'd simply plug all my devices on differents channels and use them from there.
Plus, I'll also be able to use the two others output of my virus, one more benefit !
EDIT : summing mixers seems to be what I was looking for, sadly, at around 3'500 bucks, that's simply six times the price I was ready to pay

Yes, but I must admit that I know even less about these...
How much would cost a good soundcard (with a sound quality superior to my VirusTI) with, let's say, 4 stereo input ? |

Damn, no edit button ?
Well, I've looked for a soundcard, and the Motu Ultralite MK3 caught my attention.
I'm not used to this kind of advanced soundcard (compared to what I've been using 'till now), but by looking at the conectivity, I understand that I can connect 3 stereo channels on the inputs ?
Thanks |

Yeah, can also connect a microphone and there's some digital connections there too (spdif - like in Ti).
Is a good card I'm using motu sound card and I really like it. It has an internal mixer too (works from within windows/mac). |

Thanks for the answer.
Motu Ultralite MK3 it is then !
(Was considering the Apogee Duet and the Onyx 400 F to, but they both don't have enough inputs)
I've just read that there's a compressor function on the MK3, does anyone knows if it's any good ?

summing mixers are really way too oversized if you just want to connect several synths, especially if you dont have a really good ada conversion.
motu is a good choice, but I have the mk2 and that version doesnt have a comp function as far as I know. I havent heard about mk3 having a comp yet, but the only usefull thing I see in a soundcard having an integrated comp is if the comp is analog and before the ad conversion.

A summing mixer might be too oversized, but it would color the sound even vry nice...just one advantage of summing mixers..but otherwise sure..very expensive stuff..
but check out RME Fireface 400 thats the most reliable firewire interface..very stable, clean sound..
we gave like 10 different interfaces to a study with a professor of physics and stuff like that to check them how good they really are..
and the fireface won clearly about all the others like presonus firebox/firestudio echo audiofire 4/12 motu , apogee...and so on..
that would be my weapon of choice if i could spend the money on it..
cheers

+1. I love my Fireface400. the sound is incredibly good with a helluva lot of detail. This with a good synth, like you already have, a decent set of monitors with a partially to well proofed room/ studi0 = Serious winner |

The Fireface looks indeed nice, but it's the same problem than with the Onyx 400F, not enough jack input (don't know the "real" technical term for those) to suit my needs, I have one Virus, one Blofeld, one DR-880 and one Moog LP to plug on, so that 4 devices in stereo, all using jack inputs -> 8 inputs needed.
