well, i`ve been thinking of buying a hardware compressor soon. i just like those instruments you can actually touch and realy feel not to mention the sound. (its a matter of taste).
anyway, does anybody know of good compressors for electronic music ?
also where can i find reading material on that subject cause i havent been able to find some decent reading about this.
if anyone has links i`d be very happy to read.
plus.... experience is the best way to learn so i`d like to hear form ppl who actually use or used hardware......           if u dig deep enough u just might reach the sky...

for electronic music use UREI 1178. Much better than Drawmer 1960 which is really good too

Yeah we need to know what you want and how much money you are willing to spend.

A really cheap stereo comp i can recommend is the RNC.
Its very transparent in both way it compresses and also the signal path. You really cannot hear when sound passes through and it can keep the levels in place whithout you hearing the compression. I like.

max 1500usd is not that much money for a good analog compressor, so I think the choice is more difficult.

Some bargains I know.

The RNC is mono, but you can get two of them for 400bugs.
I believe value for money is great there. I only heard it once though.

An other one that is often refered to as a real killer FOR THE PRICE, is (even though ART is good in making crap) is the ART PRO VLA it's a stereo tube compressor that goes for around 400. it can be tuned by inserting different tubes, there is some DIY around it.

I know many people who say for the price its unbeatable. I had A TLaudio C1, which goes for 1500USD and more, I sold it. recently I heard a ART Pro VLA in a friends studio, I found it sounded as good as my old TLaudio... it was no direct comparison, though. so don't nail me on that. But it's not a transparent sound, there's color. Actualy I didn't like the color so much, but thats a matter of taste and where to use it.           Most of my music for you to download at:

if you never owned a compressor i would go for the TLA Fat1. cheap, has a nice tube for that analog character, its cute , and good value for money.

and afterwards you can decide if you even want/need hardware compression, and if you feel that you do, get a more expensive unit...

i mean, i can think of many better ways to spend $1500, so if you don't have much gear yet, why spend all this on an expensive comp.

i am not an expert on hw compressors, but the Fat-1 i had here for a few months is probably one of the better pieces of gear that i had a chance to have here, especially considering the price.

well.... first of all i dont intend to use it for mastering. i still do not have the experienec the ears or the studio for that. i`m still trying to get my mix to sound right so mastering is still a long way ahead.
now for the compressor isssue.... well i`ve got an rme fireface and i`m buying a pair of dynaudio soon . now what i`d realy like is a good "fat" compressor to add some flavor to things . i dont mind it having some coloring . thats what analog is all about isnt it? on the other hand this is digital music so too much coloring isnt that good . so i`m looking for a compressor that has some charachter but not too obviuos .
thanks for all the input on this guys.....

oh and faxi... just for the fun of it... what would you spend 1500$ on ?

I was in the same situation with parapsyched a couple of months before when looking for a good comp for vocal recordings. After a lot of search and questions to many forums, i ended up buying the UAD-1e card(i know i took the exact opposite way).

But the results are totally amazing, faster and more convenient.

So, i'm gonna spend a fortune(when i'm able to) for analog gear for mastering purposes only. And it will be from Manley Labs(SLAM!, Massive Passive Eq and Variable MU)           A friend told me once that the biggest mistake we make is that we believe we live, when in reality we are sleeping in the waiting room of life.

parapsyched, well if you want to improve your mixes i'm with Alex on this, go for UAD, bcuz i'm sure your working mostly digital, and also with internal process you can have much more plugins runing, quality plugins!.

as for harware, i would go analog only for vocal recordings if you ask me....

with 1.5K i would build my self great analog channel, means, EQ + Preamp + Compressor

check out the black market here

from time to time ppl sell good stuff there...or you can DIY your own hardware

btw Alex, you heard about the new plugin that cooming soon

go to the Analog Obsession section..

Cheers

well i`m not looking for the uaad card. i know it and i would like to have one someday but i`d realy rather have a good compressr first. i just love the analog stuff uad would just add more digital options good ones maybe but still digital. and me wanting to improve my mixes has nothing to do with this. it`s the "color" i`m looking for.
and adrenal mode.... plwase tell me what would your 1.5 k analog channel would consist of...
and are we talking mono or stereo channel ?           if u dig deep enough u just might reach the sky...
