Inspired by seeing a thread I made a year ago about starting a track, I would like to open up a topic with the premise of "if you could go back to when you started producing, what would you tell yourself now with the knowledge you have gained?".
I think if we can each make a post "talking to ourselves when we were new producers" we could have an easy time giving advice for beginners to follow.
What would you say to yourself if you went back in time to when you first started producing? What advice would you give to get yourself on the right path? Maybe a simple list of do's and don'ts or just some general guidelines to make things easier.
*I'll post my own later, but wanted to post this now for others to get started*

Here's some do's and don'ts I would tell myself:
Do:
-Spend time doing actual productions (make sounds, drum patterns, create phrases).
-FINISH TRACKS!
-Gain knowledge on things that I can readily apply to my production (this relates to my don't try to apply too much knowledge at once).
-Learn some small bits of information that could be helpful in the future, but don't worry about applying them right now.
-Organize things from the start (group plug-ins by category- reverbs, delays, etc.).
Don't:
-Get bogged down in the small details.
-Try to apply too much knowledge at once.
-Download as many plug-ins as possible, then try sorting through them later (same goes for downloading too many sample packs and sorting through them later).
-Take everything you read in this section of isratrance word for word.

Good question, I had to give it some thought but came to the conclusion that I wouldn't have understood the importance of most what I would say to myself..
One thing I'd say and understand: Buy decent monitors as early as possible.
And: "learn to listen"
but I wouldn't have understood that... and when I was in my second year and met duvdev from IM after a gig I asked him for advice on bass and this was his advice to me "learn to listen".. not what I wanted to hear, to be honest. It then still took a while until I understood the utmost importance and depth of this advice.

Hi!
My first post in this forum...
- There is no "right" or "wrong" way creating tracks so always be open minded for new ideas/techniques
- Make a proper Mixdown and dont try to use 1000 Mastering plugs to get more out of a bad mixdown (you make it worse, that's for sure!)
- Less is sometimes more (It's a german collocation - don't know if it's proper english)
- You can't force yourself to be creative (But you can use times when you are not to learn something about Musicproduction)
- Dont blame your equipment when your sound is shit.
and so on and on and on... |

i would say no need to loose time with bad source and stay away from compressors until you get a good mix (learn to use a synth or buy a virus ti could be a good advice too lol) |

Man, if i started to produce music at this time everything would have been 10 times easyer!
i didn't know about this forum and i bet it wasn't as active and full of smart heads as it is now.
and also youtube seems to be flooded by nice tutorials with great advices, trips and tricks.
I mean if there is anything you would like to know or wondering about it'll take you 2sec to get the answere. So study, reading, watching is a great tool to get started.
But, learning everything from scratch i think has a charm in itself too. Takes longer for sure, but its fun to learn during the process, during every track you make u find new things to do and from that u get new ideas and new inspirations and thru that u learn something new again and so on.
It is really endless possibilitys when making psytrance, important thing to remember. So let's not copy eatchother =)

finish a track but dont waist time on polishing a track that is just not good enough. make an efficient finish then.
dont expect miracles from certain (hyped) plugs.
realize you have more then enough equipment already.
while making a track see it as important, after you finished, realize its (just) a step in your artistic development.
every next track should be better or at least equal then the last one (in certain aspects) and recognize this. if not the case, find out where you lost it.
know the rules before you break them (start in a certain style, feel free to use the cliches) go more free-style once you acomplished the basics. if you go free style as beginner you loose communication.
dont feel offended if someone does not like your music but dont ask for comments from depressed (or highly competetive, also producing) people.
dont start the sequencer if you dont feel good (goes for me)
and yes.. plus one for the monitor issue. good monitors make life more easy.

+1
+ take advice from people that make music I respect, and be more careful about listening to others.
A lot of people don't know what they're talking about but they sure wanna seem like they do.

-Don't think about equipment. Start with the bare minimum and you'll get the rest as you earn it. Even if you have the money to, you'll regret buying too much early on. Another great tip I read somewhere was not to buy any racks/desks/etc. that you can't fill immediately, because it isn't important and will make you want to buy cheap gear to fill it.
  You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me? |

I had this experience some weeks ago for real! There was this starting producer at my place for some hints. I looked at his projects and he made the exact same mistakes as I did:
by far the best tip:
- don't boost things using eq and in the end lowering their volume because they're too loud.
and also:
- give everything its space in the mix. If this means each sound its own efxchannel: do so.
- don't put reverb on everything to mask your bad synthesis of sounds.
- don't clip
- have faith & patience (actually I had more of that back then than now...)
