try to distribute your sounds in the stereo field (ie leads , fx , glitches,hats,percussions) will help with headroom and peak levels , somethimes even a +/-4 is good to take a few db more headroom , compression helps to tame the peaks if well used and high rms too

i think he means panning the signal +4/-4 (left/right) in the stereo field.
