I was recently involved in the dirtybird remix competition and as you might have already guessed i didnt win , ahahaha not even close. ANYWAY, this topic is regarding advanced music production techniques that the winners of this competition used. I currently sport an all laptop setup(ableton/reason rewired, with some vtsa). i need help to get to the next level of using real hardware that includes live mixers, mics, preamps, soundcards etc. heres what the lucky bastard used to win this competition

"his[the winner] computer running Ableton Live and Reason 4, packed out with M-Audio Delta 44 soundcard, a Behringer Xenyx 502 mixer, a set of Behringer B2031a studio monitors, Behringer Ultragain mic100 tube preamp ; Audio Tehnika AT2020 studio microphone ; M-audio MK449 midi keyboard and a western guitar !"

HOW DO YOU CONNECT ALL THAT???? and what is the reason for using all this expensive technology? what are the benefits and how do i get started?

hm...the stuff this guy uses isn't really "expensive technology"...to me it sounds more like budget equipment.

and you also won't need the most expensive stuff in order to make some good music...especially if you want to make only electronic music with your pc and no instruments.

get yourself some good monitors (and get used to their sound), an interface (if you don't want to record instruments something like esi juli@ will do) and an average pc.

but if you want to record instruments, a good mic and preamp is not a bad idea...anyway, you also don't need high-end stuff here...you won't hear the extra 1000 euros spend here until you have the experience to use the stuff right...

Sorry, but none of that guy's gear really matters. It's not anywhere near an amazing live setup, and I don't even see it as making things very convenient. All you really NEED is a laptop, decent monitors, and a decent audio interface with at least 2 stereo outs, one stereo in, and midi (sort of optional, but will help later on). Everything else just makes things a bit easier and more hands on.           You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

you can have all the gear and no idea!!! seriously its pointless having all the best equipment if your track ends up dull and having no hook to it.You can make great music with limited equipment that people will like if it his catchy and well put together.

@medea:
i mean the esi juli@ ...it's a quite cheap and stable interface...also started with this and never had problems...was just an example

Ive been making music using laptops exclusively for a couple of years now. by exclusively i mean the mixers are all virtual. i use a m-audio keyboard for the midi shit, but it plugs in the usb, it also has a xlr mic input which is great for micing guitar and vocals. my main problem is that virtual mixers peak at 0DB where as live mixers peak at 3DB. so this is a problem for me when i pile on alot of instrumentation, the mix ends up cluttered due to the lack of space. but at the same time it sounds (quiet is the word?) mmmm not PHAT but digital haha anyway i was wondering if purchasing a live mixer and (TUBE) preamps would solve my problem.

i don't think buying analog stuff will solve your problem, but learning to get your mix right might do so.
clipping might be worse in the digital domain than in analog (anyway it isn't good in both), but learning to mix with enough headroom might help.
the overall loudness of the track can be raised at the mastering stage, don't worry about that.

just keep your faders low

hola,

please forget all that analog stuff. except the guitar the winners equipment is just shit. u make better production with a laptop and decent monitors...

soundcard, monitors, maybe a synth for live tweaking. rest u don't need for phat sounds. save your money for mastering if u need really good hardware.

thecollapse ,analog gear won't get you better results until very high end stuff but they costs like a bmw , and must be skilled with analogs to get the best out of them, buying behringer or cheap gear will only get you more noise issues

-->"my main problem is that virtual mixers peak at 0DB where as live mixers peak at 3DB. so this is a problem for me when i pile on alot of instrumentation, the mix ends up cluttered due to the lack of space"

Software mixers clips at 0 dBFS (full scale) cause they're digital
Analog Mixers clips at +22/+25 dBU (1U=0,778volts) = +3VU (volume units)
VU , dBU, dBFS are 3 different measure units , vu and U are voltage , the digital just numbers ,all to say the same thing
but with different references
the 0 on analog mixers match to -18 dBFS and approx 0 VU

In digital more you get close to 0 dBFS more can easily clip ,try to keep all channels a bit low (how much depends of the loudness peak and number of trax), open the pans as more as possible and make a wise use of compression, so working at 24 bits there's a lot of headroom
