im working on an fm synth and was going to scale the envelope responces and was thinking wouldn't it be cool to ask you guys - how do you like your envelope knobs scaled? pick a minimum and maximum knob value for - attack, decay, release (for amp env, for filter env, for fm env), extra credit: do you prefer a linear straightforward knob feel or do you prefer some expo color to it?

Well, that depends..
For instance, on a 303 I think it's good to have a lot of control over the filter env decay - and a normal linear knob just doesn't cut the deal (my biggest complaint on the korg volca bass)
But, a typical 303 with a step sequencer in psy, we usually play very short notes, so the decay must be sensible and low in value. But, if you want more of "pad-type" synth with longer notes, a longer or linear decay will surface better.
My way of thinking? Please them all!
You could have two or three scaling settings - say linear, exponential (from 0% to 50%, the value is scaled to 0% - 25% for instance, and the remaining 50% scales to the remaining 75% of the value), and an "anti-exponential" (so the first part is more sensible than the last one).. or even different scaling settings.. and have a three-way switch for each env knob..
so, you'd end up with one switch for each env knob, and the user could choose if he want's one scaling setting on the attack and another setting on the decay -> so fully modular (software wise , it fits whatever the user's needs are)

some sort of state variable knobs, I think. Fine control near the extremes, specially for short values, then less points for bigger values - but always with a smooth transition/feel, not stepped values.
Knocz is right here, many developers are going this route: Snappy envelopes on/off triggers can do the job. If you allow users to change the slope/curves of envelope stages, then you can find a good compromise between the two and still allow peeps to get the control they want, maybe. |
