Ok,

I'm not really a pro at using cubase since I only use it when I got free time. So Id appreciate a little help here.

I know how to add effects to VST MIDI channels. But I can't figure out how to do it with MIDI channels when im using hardware synths.

Is my only option here to bounce the MIDI to audio then add effects that way?

Theres a difference between midi and audio effects. Audio effects work on the audio data, wheres midi effects change the on off data that triggers synthesizers.

If its audio effects u mean, then you have to route the output audio from the hardware synth into an input audio port on your computer somehow before you can add audio fx on it.

for hardware synth you have to use hardware effects or to records down to audio your synth and than add the effect on the audio channel.

summarizing your options to do what you'd like:

(option 1) use the hardware-synth internal effects unit, acting on the internally generated audio

(option 2) route the audio from the external synth to an external audio effects unit (e.g. using your external mixer)

(option 3) route the audio from the external synth into your multi i/o audio interface (e.g. using your external mixer or directly connecting the hw synth to the interface) and apply host internal audio effects (e.g. vst effects) to the audio input channel you routed the audio to

(option 4) route the audio to your (single i/o) audio interface, bounce the audio to wav and then apply host internal audio effects like applying them to any audio in your host

(option 5) put any option i forgot here

hopefully i was able to help you! i prefer option 3 (all settings together with your project), or option 2 (possibly need to store external fx units settings along with the project for archiving). and as bukboy said, there's a difference between audio effects and midi effects.

best,
