Hi all, I'm contemplating adding a sub to my KRK RP8's and wanted to get some opinions on it. Do any of you use a sub with your setup? I figured it would allow me to really hear whats going on in the low end and get it more defined and purposeful for the dance floor.
Any opinions on it? What benefits have you gotten using a sub with your setup? What are the downfalls and positives etc...
Thanx

Is your room treated? Subs can cause more problems in an untreated room.
So if you haven't already done it then treating your room will give you more mileage then a sub will. Once you've got the acoustic treatment sorted out then you can think about adding a sub.

Yes I actually have bass traps and some treatment in the room already.
I have an spl meter so I would be using that to get it balanced with the nearfields. The sub I'd be getting has a built in crossover for the neirfields.
What I'm aiming for is not to add more bass to my setup but to extend the frequency range.
So I guess it's more or less if I can get it working correctly in my room then it could be benificial, but If I don't than it's going to be detrimental?

Also one more question, would the best placement be between the nearfields or on the floor under the desk?
Thanx

From what i heard it's best to sit in the listener's position and let someone else move the sub around the room to find the best spot for it. Preferably with you sipping a glass of VSOP cognac and smoking a nepal joint. It is also important to get the phase of the sub right, the better ones have a phase knob, which lets you match the phase to that of the other speakers. The exact position is less critical than that of the monitors, since low freqs do not convey as much spatial information as higher ones (at least not for human hearing). |

Thanx for the tips guys, I think I'm going to go ahead and get one, if it doesn't work out I can always save it for when I move to a new place
