colin,
yeah, you can run multiple cards side by side.,
a friend of mine has a row of 3 rme cards running optical cables to 24 full duplex stereo channels on his mackie d8b .,
i think it's about 9 or so optical cables (if i remember correctly)
very cool setup., but it's on a mac, not sure about pc's
and indeed, rme are the thing if you want digital ins and outs
ooh, and another important tip, if you use digital connections (especially multiple) then please make sure you use word-clock .,,
this will make sure everything is in sync ,.
you can get a muddy and 'digital' sound through digital interfaces when you dont sync them properly!
greets,
aka.,

it's a bnc connector that runs a sync signal to other devices.,
you set this signal up as a bus, so every device gets the same clock .,
the result is that when one device sends data the other will know when to expect it and will not miss it.,
under normal circumstances the clocks of the interfaces can become out of sync and can drop certain bits.,
also, jitter can be introduced.,
you are not propably going to hear these small errors but the sound will become more 'harsh' and 'blurry' in general.,
greets.,

word clock is only for digital to digital transfer and separate convertors.,
so stuff with analog output like synths dont have this
if your equipment has word clock i/o's then you better use it.,
if there is no word clock on your equipment then it's propably fine and the receiving side will sync automatically., (but may sometimes drop a sample or two while transfering the data)
the big point with digital equipment is that they all run on a clock.,
and no clock is absolutely precise.,
so one piece of equipment may be outputting it's digital stream a little faster or slower than the receiver.,
word clock syncs the actual samples so the receiver will receive when the sender has put it's data on the line.,
word clock has benefits when you have a lot of digital connections (like running 24 channels from your RME card to something else)
anyway,
greets.,
