Hello everybody.

I'm about to explore a personal area of study which is the actual business of trance. I don't want to start a flamewar on topics already IMO beaten to death (mp3s vs labels vs online shops vs consumers vs poor people vs high bandwidth ) but I'm trying to conduct a study trying to find out the actual state of making and selling trance.

I very often hear from artists and label managers that sales have gone down and that in general, things have turned for the worse yet I'm puzzled by the notable increase in releases when compared to the numbers 6-7 years ago, the increased number of labels, the decreased investment needed to "make" trance music (or any music in general).

I have a couple of figures from the 94-96 era of trance, like the number of Hallucingoen "LSD" albums were sold in France for instance, but I'm curious if the decline in CD sales is a valid statement and whether or not there is just more competition with the advent of new labels and new artists.

On that note, I also hear oftentimes that people complain that there are too many labels and sublabels yet every month I notice around 3-4 NEW labels (no joke look at psyshop) so I'm curious as to why people would knowingly participate in this label "overpopulation" if you can call it that.

I've already read a couple of essays by Yaniv and some guy at chaishop or is it cosmophilia about the current state of trance business but I believe they are somewhat bias coming from a distributor POV so I'm curious to verify their findings from a consumer POV.

As for online music sales, I know of only Spindrift's resonantearth.com, which IMO is a very good attempt at exploring the underground MP3 web distribution model. But I would like to know more.

Finally, I will admit my bias and formally state that I'm against the artist-label-distribution-shop model we have today. The music industry today is trembling due to the advent of easy technology and instant distribution methods and any changes which happen in the pop-music/RIAA world are bound to happen as well in our little niche market.

So if anyone has any info, sales figures, stats, essays on the subject (plz only for trance thank you) I would be most grateful.

With that said, merry xmas

psytrance it's just turning pop.
as big the public is, bigger will be the offer. but if the offer turn too big, then the artists/labels falls down.

only the real good one will survive.           Obiit - Industrial Ambient

As there is 'overpopulation' of labels so they can say that there is a decline in individual labels' sales (due to so many artists, labels hence options for connsumers). But if we look at the overall progress of the business it's definitely growing & getting bigger......

A Psylabel owner told me that every release that is thrown in the market is selling minimum 600 cds!
the problem is that some musicians r giving their tracks to some labels for free and they are cutting down the sales of releases from labels that are in fact paying their artists to get their track .And thats when the dicrease of quality and the increase of quantity comes.
At first I thought that he was b*****g me but if u think of it he's right
anyways interestin topic.speak in numbers green ones.that would b very interesting
