First of all, i want to say hello to everyone in this forum and sorry for my english speling is not very good.
I´m looking for new monitors, i have alesi active mkII, and want to change to something more professional like dynaudio. But i have a problem chosing active or passive model. The man from the shop looked to me that he wanted me to buy active model (BM6A) wich are 1800 euro, passive model is 830 euro, much cheaper.
Wich you guys think is better??Some people tellme is better passive with a good amp. Also my experience tellme that alesi same model as my one but passive is more powerfull (20w more) than the active model wich i have.Does someone know if this is also happening in the dynaudio systems??
Can someone help me with this questions please, thanks

i have the bm6a (actives), and from what other people with bm6p (passives) tell me is that they active are far superior.
you need an amp ofcourse for the passive ones, and the built in one that comes in the actives is very good...
just ask my neighbours

According to the cheif designer at dynaudio passive is better, if you get an amp that is good to go with them.
In my experience active normally sound better that passive, especially if they are bi-amped.
I only used passive BM6 speakers though, so I don't know with those.
I have heard about a few brands that the amp's in the active version is not giving enough power.
As a rule of thumb they say that you should spend as much on the amp as on the speakers for best performance though, and with the price difference in the active and passive dynaudios i'd be suprised if the amps is not up to standard.

Frankly, I believe alot of high-end studios do use separate power amps with passives. One reason is that the active monitor is a more recent concept. Also high-end studios will use 3 and 4 way monitors. Seems like you should be able to find a clean (used) power amp for under 500 euros, that way you save 500 euros. The passives should have the appropriate phase correction (i have think Dynaudio does). With actives, phase correction can be done with low-level signals so it certainly gives the designers more options in ensuring better phase coherence across the drivers. Of course, the PA might not so it's all just folly. I luv my 824's. They punch and there's NO HISS.

I have a pair of Genelec 1029A Active monitors and i am reeeeeeaaaaaaaaaallllllllyyyyy happy with them i think also that with active you have less probability of breaking the speakers with maybe amp too strong |

@ganjagil
You have much more chance of ruining your speakers with a weak amp.
Mostly what happens is that you overload the amp and when the amp starts clipping you tweeters is blown.
If you don't know a lot about amplifiers you should definatly go for active monitors.
You obviously need to get an amp that is matching with your speakers capacity, which normally means with plenty of power compared to the rating of the speaker.
And like I said before, count on spending the same amount as on the speakers themself.

pratha - eat this ...
u buy dynaudio bm6 passive for 830 euro ...
ONLY .. if u can buy an amp for more than 800 + euros ... and i suggest crown or qsc amps ...
and by 2 channel amp . dont fuck the monitors by connceting them on single channel amp ... i think dynaudio is 2 way ... so u tecyhnically should have 4 channel amp with respective crossovers ... but if u dont want to get into all this hassle. ..
simply go and by the active versions ... the difference will not be much in the sound ... u can trust me on tht !! |
