EZ

ive been producing, or trying to for going on 2 years now, and i kind of feel like im getting nowhere fast, ive read endless pages on forums like this about production and feel as if i have a pretty good knowledge of what i should be doing, but my tunes just dont seem to have enough umph!

im using a set of rokit KRK 6s, but i find its difficult to tell whether the levels and eq are correct, because they sound quite flat when im sitting infront of the computer, with both speakers at roughly 60 degree angles to me. i find when i move back, there is noticeably a lot more bass/low frequenceies especially when ive got my back right to the oposing wall. also the room is a funny shape, kind of like an L shape, and my set up is not in the centre of the room because of this.

do you think this will be affecting the mixdown, or is it just me??? would i better moving my set up into a symetrical rectangular room? also, the speakers are facing a wall with windows, covered by blinds, could that be affecting my monitoring? total noob when it comes to acoustics so any advice would be much appreciated!

hey m8,

well, at first i have to say in two years i did not even understand the very basic basics of music production. so theres no need to hurry

what you´re hearing there is caused by the reflection of your room. acoustics is a pretty damn hard theme, but i already wrote an article here on the forum, which anyways found not that much audience ^^

at first your walls should not be naked. monitoring to the length of the room, off the wall most you can go....

another point is.....i learned about my speakers and their truth for ages and still learning, still using them, as there is no pair i know better! you need A VERY LOT of comparison to other speakers and enviroments to learn and experience the truth of your speakers, the weaks, the goods, the bads.....

to get started, feel free to read my article about improving the sound of your room at pretty much no costs....

i hope it kinda helps. cheers: stephan

the most important thing here is to know your speakers and your room. as mandari said, compare to other speakers/environments. get to know your speakers and your room. walk around in the room to get a better picture and compare your music to professionally mastered tracks.
i spend my weekends in a different city than my weekdays, so i have two different producing environments, both with strenghts and weaknesses (i don't have real monitors what makes the whole thing even more difficult). on one system i don't even bother trying to mix high frequency content, but it wonderfully exaggerates ringing bass frequencies when standing beside one speaker. complement the shortcomings of your environment by listening in a different environment (even crappy ipod headphones have helped me when mixing. but i would reccomend something better ) and use the unique character of your environment to your advantage!

get a good heaphone to help to get a good tonal balance ...the room is what affect the most the production quality once you know what you re doing , so sure moving in good room vs a bad one is night and day ,that why i also recomend a good pair of headphone ,it can really help.
