Has anyone heard of making resonance tubes.

I talked to an audio engineer one day who took two large tubes from ceiling to floor and put two subwoofers on each end. He then took a microphone and phase inverted the input. The audio that the microphone detects is inverted and drives the subwoofers on the top and bottom of the tubes. In theory this phase cancel's the frequencies that are detected at the microphone. Creates a dead zone on your corners which absorb (cancel) the frequencies detected at the microphone. Effectivly eliminating those frequencies and not having them bounce around.

I have schematics for building these things if anyone is interested. I think that you would need to put some kind of filter to the mic input so you select only the bass frequencies you wish to cancel.

Sono-Tubes...The guy I was talking to was raving about these things.

What do you all think. BS or good idea?

Chatting with Ethan Winer online, he recommended applying broader band low end treatment before you attempt any narrow band treatment. He felt that it was often not always needed, and that narrow band was not sufficient alone, that every room need broad band absorbption.

I'm no expert, but I get the impression that the trap design you are talking about will not be adequate for modal ringing by themselves. Likewise, they will not be adequate for peaks & nulls created by standing waves on the walls. In concert with other absorbers & traps, they could fill out the picture.

at work we have recently installed renkus heinz speakers into a basketball stadium and the line array and bass speakers came in pallets with top and bottom panels of plastic filled with that polyurethane foam that expands. i basically have enough to make 4 corner bass traps and heaps more panels need be. The panels are 1mtr (width) X 1mtr (length) X 300/400mm in depth.. is this stuff going to be useful or should i throw it and use rockwool..

well.... im made some new research and the only thing that i can tell you, is that...
The rockwooll is the best absorverd thing that i have see im my research.
The basotect, as 2 advantaged....
1- You dont have much work...is just buy and fixed....
2- if you go move to other studio, you can grab it and go...and work well more a less >400 hz

But after all that research, i thing im going now buy some rockwool and made some bass traps with high density (140 kg/m3) to cover all my coners, and buy another rockowool with density of more a less 40/60 kg m3 to cover my walls...
Some people likes foam, other likes rockwool.. and finaly i made my choice.....
I hope in good results on that.... i can wait much more time in this....i have to treat my studio....
But for people who things that rockwool is very cheap in relation to foam.....the difference is not so much.....(but i talking about rigid rockwoll), is more clean to work....and have good results or better than the other type....
To all of you...thanks to help me again...
In this forum i learn things that problebly i have to work years and years to find for me...
Thanks....really thanks...

Maybe you guys can help me out a little on what sort of absorbation plates and basstraps I need and where to place them.
So I made a few snapshot of a 3d drawing of my room, which although not ideal also serves as my 'studio'.

Here's how it looks like:

http://postimage.org/gallery/7wytr6b6/

My 'studio' department is around my desk, which is topped by a loftbed at about 180cm high.
The bed is pushed into the left corner of my backwall, which of course doesn't seem very logical for acoustic reasoning, but it really looks weird if I move it over to the exact middle position in relation to my audio-desk.
Apart from that, I also have a pair of windows on one side of the room and not the other.
So what would you suggest in order to get my room a little more balanced?

@Adharaguy: you dont need to cover all your room but to create a reflexion free zone in your studio, basstraping in the corners is a must, wall to ceiling corners are VERY important also. for placing treatment in walls you can use the mirror method:

there are alternative materials for rockwool, but they arent cost effective pm me for a list of them if youre intrested
