What is meant by this term? are there any synths that are made more for this? or is all a matter of playing around with the regular sound. Is it a certain type of structure? are there any VSTs?           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

Well the good and the ol' ReBirth will do the job.
Or in Reason 2.5 you can make a simple bassline signal and "Acidize" it with the Sound Destroyer Unit.
I made some very warm sounds with it.
Very nice tool, i tell ya.           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

almost any decently specified (virtual) analogue can do it... i have got great results from the synth1 (free vsti- get the preset banks from kvr-vst.com as well, the 'crystal method' patches are ideal once u decrease the filt env mod), v-station, and my ms2000r.

just turn up the resonance, automate the shit out of the cutoff, turn up the filter drive if it has one and/or distort quite heavily (i prefer blood overdrive - also free vst), then pipe into some delay (preferably filter-delay like ohmboyz) and a nice reverb... easy peasy.           http://www.dartrecordings.co.uk/
