i got 2 installations on windows on my laptop. One for internet use, and one for liveperformance. Each on different partitions of my HD.
So now the internet boot got sick and needs repair or reinstall of windows, and now im using the liveperformance boot, using internet on it temporary until i fix the other one.
The problem i got is acessing the files in my documents on the internet windows install. When i click the folder it gives me an access denied message. I think this must be because the internet boot has password protection on user login when starting up. So any one got a clue how i can enter the protected folders again ?

Use a Linux Boot CD and copy the whole thing to elsewhere.

Your "My Documents" folder becomes secured once you enter a password to the account.
If you can log in to your "sick" installtion, copy the relevant files out of My Documents into a different folder (let's say c:\backups).
or visit: http://techbold.com/2007/06/access-another-user-private-folder-in/?showComment=1184012700000
If not, try what full_on offered, that way you're bypassing the protection of the folder (doesn't have to be linux btw, a DOS boot can do the trick too)
Also, what is the problem with the account ? maybe it's still possible to fix it... |

Hi Partzi
thanks for the link. I tried it out, but unfortunately it did not work. I must also mention the internet boot is normal XP while the live boot is TinyXP.
I can not log in to the sick windows because, suddenly out of nowhere, i just get the message that 'it is unable to boot because a file called hall.dll is missing or damaged'. I didn't install any new stuff or visit bad websites or any of that since last session.
Hall.dll is as i can see a file the makes the hardware communicate with the software. I tried to replace hall.dll with the one from the other boot, and also with the one from my studio workstation, but it didn't help. I read that it can be repaired using a windows cd, but at the moment i only got my windows vista CD.....and i think it can only reset my laptop using the reserved HD space with factory files for full system reset.
I think i must go for full_on's linux suggestion as you say then.
Why does the easy way never work ?

Sounds simple, but try running a boot time scandisk on the whole drive. This usually fixes a lot of bluescreens and can't-find-file problems on windows boots.

wow!
i actually cancelled that scan after it seemed stuck, but now i tried to let it run, and after 6-7 minutes it started correcting errors.
So everything is great again, and i can stop thrashing my live boot with internet surf!
Thanks for the help, to all of you!
