I just won the bid for an Access Virus A (the original) on ebay for a really good price. I know its not the best and there are many soft synths that can sound better but I always wanted to own a virus.

My question is to whoever has owned one or played with one. Any feedback on performance etc.? Thanks..           StarLab - Label DJ/Artist for Digital Om Productions

Good price that. I got my Virus C for 450€ with the rack ears.

Its a deep synth, start reading the manual and make your own sounds. Factory presets are all over the place in releases of early 2000.

the editor i guess you can forget it if you're on mac (or maybe modern windows)

They dropped the support a while ago, dunno why the software it's still out there, very buggy btw (tryied it log time ago)

It's a very powerful synth , it has strong character but less oscs and filters than the following ones (until you switch into multi mode).
Even fx section is pretty basic, nothing to do with complicate TI's alghorithmim, just unison chorus and delay
But with all these vst nowadays...who cares for effect

a bank or two from roben papen it's still on Access's website, grab it all before they tear it down
Easy to upload on synth with SYSex Librarian

One thing i figured out is that the filter builds 50% o more of the final sound           http://mystic-sound.com/releases/ioon-cosmic-downtempo-9314-oclock/

Thats great info dude! Thanks! Yes Im not worried about the fx section at all. But Im confused as to which is the latest OS that will work with the A? Also upto which model patches can work with it? Its still not delivered so Im not being able to try anything.           StarLab - Label DJ/Artist for Digital Om Productions

I bought one because I wanted a versatile hardware synth but to be honest I did not much with it, the programming really turned me off after some days, I guess menues are not my favourite

the novation nova I got now has a good solution for the menu and gets programmed every then and now           https://soundcloud.com/noordzee-laborant

I had once a couple years ago.

It is a very nice machine... it has a certain trance / goa nostalgia feel to it.

I didn't want to sell it but i had to...

Look mate... this synth could dissappoint you in some areas, yeah you can fall into the 'Sylenth1 can get similar sounds' argument but don't look down bro.

There are certain features that are just gold in this machine:

- Waveshapes
There is just a universe of strange OSC shapes inside the virus... try FM / SYNCH different wave shapes to obtain very nice "virus only" sounds like rich warm low leads to screaming acid...

- Filter / distortion
There is this timbre that virus can produce... it just its trade mark; the acid sound on the demo song included in virusA ROM. I love that resonant distortion that won't come out that easy from your regular VSTs. Just crank the resonance and add distortion... works better on sync leads.

- Also the FX section can be pretty interesting, delay settings allow crazy shit to happen.

It's a beautiful machine dude... you have instant lush pads, plucky shit and what not in your preset banks... it's a nice way to get to know the access world but yeah you will be constantly thinking what would it be to have a brand new Virus Ti2 hehe.

Very nice tool for psy.

^^ Thanks mate! Now Im even more excited about it. Any idea which is the latest OS I can use with it? I intend to make my own sounds with it but for my knowledge can I use sample banks of B & C in it as well?           StarLab - Label DJ/Artist for Digital Om Productions

The wavetables and the ability to FM the oscillators with wavetable output are the Virus' strong points in terms of sound. Then there is the modulation matrix that is deep.
I had the Virus Polar TI and sold it, got a Virus C later on. I am used to the submenus, they are well organized and for what its worth I got much better sounds out of the C then I ever did on the TI.

best bit of advice i could give you is buy a couple of
distortion pedals, something you like with a very wide range from very soft clipping to melt your face off

i use the aux routing and the sub stereo mix to put my oscillators through a pedal then go back into the filters in the virus b , sorts out the week hipass and can give it a bit more punch ,plus it can be before or after the filter and saves with the preset

like nectarios i hads a ti2 and also sold it
just didnt rock my socks really

of course like any synth there are pros and cons but once you get used to the faults you quickly find out how to sort them out
also a limited feature set can be a really good thing better understanding of the sweetspots and makes you more disciplined in the way you work

i still feel to this day that nobodies ever really MILKED a virus to the best of its abillities and is still a synth thats still got some legs despite the age and amount of users

good synth before the hype(AND DONT FUCKIN START EITHER) ;}

Nectarios, does the Virus C come with moog filter

yep it have the moog emu, i enjoyed it for some resonant patchs, acid stuff too.
the C was really good to program to me, sub menus was not a issue.
the A i guess sound more digital and maybe in a good way

from what i have read on the net lot of guys i that switched from C to Ti enjoyed more the C sound
