in the sampling section of the most important topics, there's a lot of stuff about how to record samples from movies, radio, etc etc.. which is simple i guess in one way or another. but here's my question. i recently bought a lot of nice samples, and i want to assign them into a sampler that i can trigger with my controller and tweak the hell out, like actually make sounds that i can modulate with these samples. i could do it with an internal sampler like wave controller or directwave (DAW - FL), and arrange them to perfection, but there's a problem. my current project is a psychedelic freestyle band with a drummer and a bass guitarist, and i should be able play these live on stage, and it would be wicked since a sample based live bit can be way more eventful than just playing one or two layered vsti's together. How do i achieve this? and what programs can i use? kontakt is too expensive, is this my only option or are there alternatives? i would to hear what you guys do too..

also what parameters could i modulate with samples to get optimum control when playing live? please help me out. it'll be wicked if i sort this out and implement in our gigs.

Ableton's built in sampler is very powerful, plus Ableton is designed for live use.

As for 'what parameters to modulate' it really depends on the sample. Some common things to do are to change the pitch of the sample, loop the sample, reverse the sample, cut it into tiny pieces, adjust the start point of the sample while playing MIDI notes to get a stuttering effect...

Sampling is endless.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

if it is instrumental stuff then of course assigning velocity and aftertouch to various parameters is essential, as well as working with the pitchbend/modulation wheels for various instrument nuances... if it is anything else, go wild!

for serious sampler work like oldschool samplers there won't be cheap options.

kontakt and halion are probably the standard, giga sampler but that is even more $.

my daw is logic but i don't really use sampling there even though it has a very nice sampler.

i love the simple sampler channel strip in fl. probably not what you are looking for, but for single-sample triggering and mangling it is simple and fun and has a ton of features to play with the sound.

Since I started using samplers a lot again I've been getting a lot more creative with music. Its the whole assign sounds and their reversed copies on the keyboard and simply jamming a groove on top of the music which feels a lot better than just dragging audio clips in the arrangement. Then by having a pitch bend of 2 8ves = even more creativity. Use them lots in our live sets as well.

Peace out.

Ableton has the simpler and sampler. Both should be usable to trigger samples. Otherwise Battery is a nice option that is not too expensive. You can also assign lots of parameters from Battery to your keyboard.           soundcloud.com/supergroover

I'm using Logic's EXS 24 by the way. The filter section sounds nice but is not as flashy as Kontakt's.
It's super nice on the CPU and get's the job done.

Peace out.

Thank you very much guys. I understand that sampling is a very important part of the process, and i think i'll buy one of these even if it takes a little time. i'm really impressed with HALion and I'll probably invest on it in a little while. till then, good old directwave will do. hehe

I started to learn Ableton live, and one of the things over the flstudio is the abundance of different samplers, and multisamplers.I still don't have full control over flstudio multisamplers, and in ableton its peace of pie.

But anyway,if its flstudio you use and know, there is a tool (two tools) called slisex and and fruity slicer (lol,"fruity").It can assign different midi keys to different samples and you can triger them by external controler.

Very nice, very easy.Load your sample first into Edison, chop it up,drag it into sequencer and it will add an instance of fl slicer all by itself with a chopped sample.

Here it is:

I am still missing the mv8000. There is currently no software sampler which has its convenient workflow.

Geist is close but it has no polyphonic multisample & glide mode. And its pad filters only update on note-on.

Kontakt is tedious when it comes to creating patches on the fly and the scroll interface is distracting in my opinion.

Halion3.x has great filters ! but it has no Portamento on Legato mode

DirectWave, the interface is to small for my taste.
My hand hurts when i try to map multisamples.

I am excited to try Halion4, can't wait to get my hands on the trial once its released.

Anyone is goot at using SynthEdit or SynthMaker or even better coding Java, C# or C++?          http://facebook.com/ansolas
