Most of the people today got broadband (or some connection that can stream 128kbps files), and if they can't they can just download it.
I don't see the problem with it.

mike,
the issue at this stage for us is not that people don't have the bandwidth to download higher bit rate samples (although afaik the market share of broadbanders is currently around 30%, which isn't really high enough to impact), but rather that it's a dramatic increase in bandwidth at our end. moving from 33kbps files to 128kbps is quadrupling [4x] the files sizes of the samples, which would increase our bandwidth quite a lot, which is costly for us. samples are currently something like 80% of our bandwidth usage.
it's also important to note that we are not aiming at the highest quality here - we merely want clarity, so people know what the music sounds like. and we want it as fast and as small as possible - which are generally one and the same.
however, lately real audio are starting to annoy me - their player has grown in size to be about 9mb [which of course shouldn't be a problem is everyone today has broadband, but they don't], and i have been considering converting over to windows media format or ogg vorbis. what are people's opinions of wmf and ogg? imo ogg is pretty nice but doesn't have the support yet. wmf looks good because it's part of the windows os [about 97% of our users are on windows machines], which means people don't need to download it, and it's difficult to decode to wav, which means the labels and artists are more comfortable with us providing it as samples [another aspect of mp3s which is discouraging for labels and artists - simply mention the word 'mp3' to any big label or artist and they get this painful look on their face..] |
