I'm off topic here, but:
1.As a PC user I can say Quicktime is the most horribly coded program I've ever seen (Realplayer is the second most horrible, BTW ).
From what I've seen, I'd hate to say but DirectShow with Windows Media Player 6.2 is the best.
2.I think streamable MP3s are the most accessible files for every potential customer (almost every known media player plays them), therefore they should be used. |

Well try the latest QuickTime TIMMY. The known bugs have been sorted out now that iTunes (+ it's Music store) has been released for Windoze. I still say that QuickTime is the no. one free player and if you buy the pro version you're well off with all new encoding standards such as mpeg4/mp4 (go home mp3)
RealAudio is too damn slow on any platform.

Well Kristian, I don't care how good it as, as long as it puts an icon in my tray.
I have yet found a way to remove that icon (and I can remove just about everything ) without it coming back everytime I run QT.
I'm sticking to winamp. 2.

Well, I'll try Quicktime sometime, thanx, altough it's hard to believe they fixed ALL the bugs.
Anyway, for digital audio playback, foobar2000 is the best

hi,
for a while i considered moving over the samples on saiko sounds from .ra [Real Audio] files to .mp3 files. i did several tests and a bit of research, and i discovered that mp3s are basically designed to have a minimum bit rate of 128kbps. you can encode mp3s at a lower bit rate than 128, but it is not designed to do this very well, and basically just takes away sounds without any serious processing done. the real audio files we have at saiko sounds are all encoded at a bit rate of approximately 33kbps. if you listen to a real audio file at 33kbps and then listen to the same file encoded with mp3 at 56kbps - which is a larger file - the mp3 sounds a lot worse - the bass is muddy and the hats are dull.
i also investigated using .wma [Windows Media] files, which sound very nice at low bit rates - comparable to the real audio. i considered using these but at the time felt that there wasn't too much of a difference between wma and real audio.
i'm also a big fan of using the real audio player inline - plugging it into a web page instead of using it as an external application. i'm using this in the saiko sounds jukebox, which we will launch soon.
if anyone would like to check out the saiko sounds jukebox feel free to contact me privately [via email, please - jaimz@saikosounds.com] and i will let you beta test it. the concept of the jukebox is that you can queue as many audio tracks as you want to listen to and then open a jukebox which will play them one at a time without you having to click on each one.
hail eris,
jaimz. |
