Nice fuzzkitten, yeah interesting stuff indeed. when you think about it, if you drum a melodys rhythm with your hands it has a constant pitch (if you hit at the same point all the time) so it has no pitch changes at all but you can easily tell which melody it is anyway(your self of course, cause you know it in your head)... so the pulses is ground zero. (wtf did i think yesterday)

now if you play this monotonous melody on a instrument that contains harmonics(a smooth mixture of many different pitches) it will sound strange, it will sound more natural playing it with a non pitched sound.
the melody plays the harmonic part in your head/brain when you play its rhythm with a non pitched instrument.. not that this is of any scientific interest(call it bullshit), but im thinking about the brain part(which part?) how we are able to relate to a tone without a actual instrument, our brain is the instrument. it sounds a bit naive(corny idiotic, stupid) but i found it to be completely messed up anyway, hehe.

Okej this is just way too corny! im blaming the weed! haha
lets just disregard it!

Ok here's something easier than my previous suggestion--plug in a microphone, make sure noone is around (LOL), hit record, and just wing it. Sing whatever comes to mind, to the beat, to a track, whatever you want to do. Just go the fuck off the deep end. Then, later on, translate it to a synth part.

The voice is the perfect and best melody creation tool on the planet. It adds an extra step to the process, but you will find no better way to access your purest ideas, especially if you are not a virtuoso on any instrument.

My girlfriend recommended this to me a few months ago, and it's the BEST TRICK EVER.

Indeed it is. It can be very difficult, and frustrating during the process, especially if you don't have a really good ear for translation or if you can't sing too well.

But the fact is, the trade-off involved, which is resigning yourself to spend more time translating ideas, buys you the chance to be an actual *composer* rather than a technology slave who gets caught up in the processes and quirks of a particular piece of software, an instrument, or a board.

Granted you can't use it for everything, and sometimes the value is lost in the translation. But it's a good skill to develop. That's why I wish the state of the art in "audio to MIDI" devices and applications would advance...imagine the idea of composing straight from the brain [via voice] to the song...oh the strange things that would emerge.

Hi Folks,

Fuzzi thats real cool! i shall try that mic thingy tonight (watch out neighbours)

I little something that helps me to get grrreat melodies is to put some little colored stickers on the scale that you require over a few octaves. I then jam in some crazy riffs at half speed and i NEVER hit a bum note. This is great for intricate melodies that jump up and down the scale.

I hope this may be of some use to you.

btw... you can still devaite from the stickers to create even more vicked melodies.

Peace out.

first , create the melody in your mind - not on the keyboard! sing it... for highly talented people the music is just in their head all the time and they have endless melodies.. but u don't have to be THAT talented to be able to create great melodies
IMO there is no need for much music theory here, it can surely provide some help, but your creativity is the most important tool when composing melodies
also, try starting with the MELODY first and then the harmony, make a melody and then match the chords for it.           u can find "Anything U Want" using the search...

not really )

i use a scale wich has some sort of arabic feeling (mostly become of the semi-tones involved) and sounds kind of misterious to me at least...

C C# E F G G# A#

notice the semi tones from C > C#, E > F and D > G#

apart from that C major... or notes from any chord i choose at the moment (read spiral guide for chords)

joao

ps: most of my melodies are in G, E or C (but mostly C)          roll a joint or STFU :)

man, this was a great thread... i've done music theory so it wasn't as usefull to me, but i think it really deserves to become sticky

br0d: that voicetrick (why didn't i think of it myself...) is INCREDIBLE!!! now i never loose track of my ideas anymore, and when something comes to mind, i just record it in 30sec!! And the fact that can't sing for shit doesn't bother me... Every time i hear what i sung my memory kicks in and i exactly know what i meant by it... Simply fabulous...

don't forget the dissonants guys!! U have bad and good dissonants (the good ones will sound good automatically, the bad ones sound good too, but u can hear that they don't fit). Dunno which is which anymore, but that doesn't matter... It comes down to shifting the middle note of ur chord up 1 semitone or down 1 semitone (that doesn't mean u can't use that note anymore)..
I'll take C major here... The disonant in this case is D#. Now make some melodies just using C, D# and E... Sounds great doesn't it? Just a little jazzy? That's because this is used all the time in jazz ofcourse...
Anyway, i love this trick, the exact theory is lost to me now, but experiment, there are lots of good and bad dissonants to play with...
