i was just wondering, if a dj, when he spins on a stage, does he HAVE to beatmatch? like lie the kicks on top of each other when its time to switch track? arent a dj alowed to leave any space in between there? |

The tempo HAS to be beatmatched, even if u only do an intro-outro mix... otherwise u will fuck up the energy level...
I would advise u though not to do intro-outro mixes, that is one of the most horrible aspects of psytrance... So many dj's doing intro-outro mixes instead of mixing properly... |

I agree, that many psytrance DJ's don't mix very well, if at all. Matching tempo is important, but once you've really learned it, I think that changing tempo, or giving a break can really add dynamic to your set.
Whenever the music comes to a lull, people's attention will immediately come to you, so it's a tool that you can use for some dramatic effect. But Fregle is right, too many disjointed mixes will results in a set that doesn't take you on a journey.

There are plenty of really great Dj's out there, that can mix really well and creatively. Beatmixing is important for a good set, a good dj should be able to do it, but doesnt mean they do it every mix, depends what you are doing. Fade in fade out can be well done also, but mix after mix it can get a bit boring.
Music selection is also important, at some point loads of people wanted to become DJ's and some people DL all the mp3 P2P and have too much music, subsequently dont really get to know the music they have, and cannot mix it properly. Best get to know your music, and play the tracks that you really love, and know how to mix together properly, then you can play a beautful set that makes sense and comes from the heart.

but, isnt there a bit boring that everyone seem to leave no space in between the trax?
i mean, the mission is to make em melt in each other right.. so what will 5 seconds of kick-less-ness do? |

There's already too much space WITHIN each track, with all those breaks and intermezzo's. When you go to a psytrance festival you hear those all the time and it gets sooo predictable that it becomes annoying.
Anywave, i think that dj's HAVE to be able to beatmix. It's best if you have a choice between beatmixing or not when mixing two tracks, especially if you're after a certain effect. It's just a fun trick that's not really very hard to learn.

Its basics, you MUST know how to beat match, then, its up to you to decide when to or not to. |

the o.7 rule applies to beatchmatching trance (well morning music 0.8 for dark).. most dj's dont share this cuz they r kunts...
but on that note i hate dj's that beatmatch every track into the other perfectly..... just get boring after a while... i like the stop when u play an intro and outro...
dj's like riktam who play 4 tracks a min lol impress me cuz they are cutting up their tracks and to me thats where the real skill lies..
hope i answered ur q!! good luck to ur dj'ing edndevours..

i think djs have to be able to beatmix, it's their job to keep the flow running (and personally, as i am a dj, i think it's really not that hard). if an intro-outro break fits the theme it's ok i think, i do it sometimes (like 1-2 times in a 3h set) to get some rest for the people but most time i make mixes where there is no intro-outro thing. the outro of the first song is the lead to the bassline of the second and things like that. also, i think its very important for the trance experience to have no breaks (or at least not very long ones). i tend to play tracks where there's very little long breaks. and for these 1.5 minute blabla-breaks thats so common in psytrance, i most times just play the beat from the other track. the kick has to go on and on and on and on !!! |

For this my answer would be: No, No, Yes. (talking about kick-bass beatmatch).
