Just select track volume in the dropdown for automation and draw your fades.

It would be nice sometimes with folders, but 80+ tracks is a mess regardless and having track folders hardly is a make or break feature for me.
A lot of stuff that I usually did on separate tracks I now do by using instrument and effects racks so I never and up anywhere near 80 tracks.

I use an audio editor on the rare occasion when I need to do a lot of audio editing.
Only the recover from undo have saved me more time than all of those features combined would have, not to mention pattern based sequencing, racks and the neat controller implementations.

there is also something no one metioned about live, that helps on that y-x fade...
you can make clip envelope for about any automated command from inside the sample...without having to draw automation on the arrangement....
that way you can not only do crossfade, but any-effect-fade....without having to write ANYTHING on the arrangement...all from within the audio samples...
and for audio editing, exactly what spindrift said...
all you have to do is right click on the audio sample - manage sample , file management will pop up, and just click on any EDIT button, and your audio editor will open up, with the sample already open...
and about the 80+ tracks....you simply DONT organize 80+ tracks... doesnt matter which daw you in, it will always look messy =p
  un-fucking-believable |

my opinion:
+ cubase: offline processing
+ ableton: when cutting samples no need to fade out or/and fade in cause ableton detects zero point/crossing in the samples and cuts there --> so no klicks and pops
both are great programms - we are very happy to have the choice! and yeah, there are even more daw's... |

you can do that in cubase too .
the problem with the fade , i use it like a envelop ,for example with kicks i fade to remove some bass ,but i need to make a loop for that(fading all the kicks at the same time), in the next update it ll be available if i m right, i had to use midi and a sampler in live.(that give better result and control but it take more time ) |

why sampler and midi in ableton? u can do all kind of automations in the sample itself, so you shouldnt need that... |

yes but its usefull to ear the fade in real time ,for example with a kick i can set the right amount of bass with the tempo (looping a bar and fade the 4 kick at the same time for example )things like that.with automation it ll take more time , like automate the fade for 4 kick then selecting the 4 point of automation and move them like a audio fade. |

if u do that automation for one kick u just duplicate and thats it....where's the problem? if u wanna see the effects on the audio sample u consolidate and then u can see what happened... no problem either... |

Ur getting lost in irrelevant details.
Tell me how to set up any midiclip to loop with any other clips of choice instantly in cubase just for the fuck of it when u feel instantly inspired. Instead of having to laboriously set up a take just to experiment. |

i think that's not the question...
The tool is not important...but yes what you do with that tool...
I write my tracks fully on Ableton...and don't feel the necessity to change my plataform untill now...but I work on past with sonar, reason, logic...with making music I don't see perceptive differences on processes of creation...Is a personal choice...like you choice a lemon juice or a orange juice...a whisky or a vodka...etc
Of course each software have yours up and down points...but many times is about the method of do something...and not about with do something new...

How are they irrelevant? Details are important IMO Like the detail where it requires 2 tracks in Ableton just to mix 2 pieces of audio together...
I'm not saying Ableton sucks, it's really a great program, very fast and intuitive, I'm just saying Cubase doesn't suck, because I don't think it does. It has a ton of features that really make workflow in "some" areas alot faster than in Live and vice versa.
People get their host they like and then they bash everybody else's. Why not just say why you like it rather than bashing a totally legitimate highly capable piece of music equipment thats all...

automation and after duplicate it s not like earing a loop of kick and adjust the fade excalty where it sound good .anyway sampler are more apropriate for that but no fade on a audio sequencer is a joke to me |

maybe that picture can clear that up for you ;-)
http://www.iimg.de/08.11.07/ig3sdi.jpg
in the sequencer you see an automation of volume and more down you'll see the automation of the volume of the loop (one kick loop)...
ps: i'm not saying ableton is better or something, i just wanted to show my pro/con |

Sonar owns them both
Seriously though I think you are talking about two different animals all together. I find that ableton is good for arranging and at times can be useful for sketching rough ideas when speed is essential. I used it quite a lot after logic went to mac, but my CPU wasn't liking it. But I think Cubase will outdo it for deep editing anyday. I find a lot of the people who use Ableton are either fairly new to the whole thing or they are DJ/producers, looking for a great integration solution. Whereas many cubase users generally have a bit more knowledge of the whole apple. |
