Hello everyone.
I recently switched from fl studio too ableton. I had some high cpu usage in fl before, but then i bought a new computer with good spec.
However, now in ableton the horror has come back!, even when i just started up a project soon the cpu usage go up too 400 and i cant barely work.

Do you have any tips for reducing the cpu?. I have a quite powerful i7 it should be able to handle this, especially on the few synths and instruments i now use in the project.

When you have issues like this most of the times is a general pc problem rather than daw and cpu. Because with your processor should work very well. I run ableton in my 2nd pc also with intel core 2 duo 1.86ghz with 4 gb ram and i dont have problems at all.

Well, lets take it from the start.

How much ram do you have?
Even if you have a powerful cpu without much ram you will find problems. A powerful cpu and much ram is the best compo.

Which version of ableton 8 do you use?
I'm on 8.3 version and works wonderful. They have released 8.4 beta version with 64-bit support...if you are in this version maybe have some issues cause is beta version but i dont know. Better to look in their forum to see...

Did you setup ableton correctly?
Preferences is so important for how ableton works. Check these videos:

Check all the parts of this tutorial...very useful.

See how your pc works in normal mode without any procedure.
Just type ctlr+alt+del -> task manager and go to performance. Take a look how your pc works in normal. If you see strange things probably somethings going wrong. Make a full scan for virus trojans etc and maybe run a speed up. Try to keep your pc clean, many programs and stuff can be a good reason to keep your pc in low level. A music production pc is the best way...A pc only for music production.

Take a look also your vsts. Maybe some vsts doesnt work nicely...

Check your drivers for update.

Good luck

You must have a bad version of ableton or did something wrong. If you open up a project and its already at 400% CPU yeah...            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

Something's not right, I know of people who run Logic and have Ableton rewired on i5 and have no problems making tracks.

Thanks for all the answers.
I got 6gb of ram.
Ive noticed that ableton only uses 600mb of ram in my taskbar, where fl uses up too 1600 mb.
Is there any way to uses extended memory on ableton?.
Maybe i should upgrade the version, internet is so bad in india tho it will take an eternity too update.

check your latency settings.

if they are not set properly it can cause very high CPU usage, even with nothing in the set.           http://soundcloud.com/soospicey

My ableton 8.2.7 is taking up 1.4 gigs of RAM currently in my task bar.

You need to do some troubleshooting to figure out where the problem is. I'm assuming you have an external soundcard? Try unplugging it, and use the onboard sound of your computer and see if the CPU usage remains.

Maybe try disabling your external VST folder temporarily and see if that fixes it. Live 8 of any version has never given me a similar problem to yours.           If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

I have version: 8.14.
So kind of old i guess. Probably i have a unstable verison.
I noticed some really odd things when i tryed to figure out the problem.
The drum rack seem to be one of the problems.
Ya i got a external soundcard, tried that and doesent resolve it .

Guess i just will just have to update.

Thanks for all ure answers.           .

Probably not the solution, but just in case...

If you're on a PC, click on the Performance Settings button in the Advanced tab of the System Properties window and go to the Advanced tab. Make sure processor scheduling is set to Background Services.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Yes, it is 32bit for now, 64 still in beta, so you will only work with +-3.5GB of ram.           Free album out now:
