I prefer Ableton because it really feels like you're playing an instrument. It is very intuitive and user friendly, supports vst/au, supports most any form of audio format, and is really fun to use!
I had (do have) trouble with Cubase...just getting it up and running is confusing (for me). It feels like programing music...and i'm no programer! But it seems to have a better audio engine than Ableton...though Live 7 has an upgraded engine and sounds great to me!
Good luck!

Yeah no doubts, Ableton is more intuitive but...
on Cubase you have endless possibilities, based on my experience on both i would say that the sound that i achieve with Cubase i couldn't get it with Ableton
At the begining Cubase seems the least "user Friendly" you ever see but once you get the basics is easy to keep learning
As i say...thats my opinion, experiment with both and you'll get your answer |

Cubase has a couple of extra features like offline processing, used by some artists to make their specific sound, groove quantise, native surround mixing...
And its missing some very important functions too. like deep freeze (moving frozen bits around, cutting up, rearranging on the fly), and session view. (since live 7 the mixing engine is 64bit and sounds much better than 6, I dont think anyone will fault the 7 mixing engine, since ableton have actually gone to lengths to prove the output is correct )
The difference is that cubase was designed for studio work with big clunky hardware units that had to be integrated, whereas Live approaches the DAW market from a more modern point of view which integrates software plugins far more implicitly than does the Studio approach of cubase.(having said that people complain about the 128 controller limit)
Personally I hate the way cubase forces you to move around all your tracks to get different combinations of takes, whereas in live session view its as easy as pushing a button to get exactly what you want. Others will find some features of cubase indispensable
But as one artist put it very palpably, "choose the DAW which best suits your workflow" (irrespectively of what others say) |

Thanks for that analysis bukboy, that helped a lot. I'm starting to understand why some artists prefer one over the other.
If I get trial versions of cubase and ableton, what would plugins would you all suggest I get for each one? Is there a master list somewhere with good ones to use/get started with? Thanks.

Both Cubase and Ableton is great for the purpose.
In my oppinion the choice boils down to this. -Do you expect to do intuitive live performances?
If you are, Ableton is coinsidered the best live software of the two and since it is approximately as capable as Cubase you would save some time by picking it for both studio and live use.
If you arent interested in extenssive live performances, I am a leaning a bit towards Cubase because I think it is a really great piece of software and probably a bit better than Ableton.
Maybe because they have been around longer than Ableton and therefor have tweaked and tested the program more thoroughly.
but the smart advice to give would be that you should pick the one you like the most after some testing.
personally we use Cubase in the studio and Ableton Live, but we are actually thinking about going straight Ableton.
Good luck with it mate..

Ableton is better for playing live..I guess that's obvious and hard to argue. I like using Ableton in the studio too because I mess with the arrangement a lot before any track is finalized. Download some trials..
  You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me? |
