I am going to start the venture of psytrance production and wanted to hear which program people think is better: Ableton or Cubase? Give me any reasons why you think one is better than the other, or why one is just good by itself (if you haven't used both). I would like to hear about the interface, available plug-ins, ease of use or anything else you can think of. Thanks!

PS- I know "better" is a subjective term so just leave a subjective opinion with your own interpretation of the word "better"           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

Why do you choose only between Ableton and Cubase? There are many other DAW's that are quite suitable for electronic music production.

I personally don't like Steinberg product's (except their Stereoexpander plug-in ), but it's very subjective, many people successfully use them, this all is a matter of habit...

Well, pro logic is out of the question since I'm not getting a mac and I don't like fruity loops or Reason. These are 2 programs used by producers that I am friends with so it will be easier to get started.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

Hey it's Airyck I'm a big fan of Cubase, but both are very capable. I just run into things I can't do in Ableton that I'm already used to in Cubase (such as organizing tracks, and audio cross fades) but if you are just getting started then either will do.           ~Airyck~

I say the Cubase's interface is very bad, if dyou don't know how to use it then it will take you a while to find out. I prefer FL Studio to make my loops, and then I make my tracks and lives in Ableton, but my advice for you is to try all of them out. Get the demo or trial version and see what you can do with them!
In the end you'll see that every DAW is self-capable to do almost everything (in their own way), but you'll find each program better for a certain thing.

For example, linux has a program called LMMS witch is awful and disgusting. But I still use it to create most of my dark basslines cause of certain functionalities it has. For certain most other DAWs have that function but the process isn't as linear. So basically you can use which program you want, as long as you export your sounds to loops and samples. So when I open my ableton LIVE to play around with all these loops I created, I have a lot of diversity in my production folder, and I can make new sounds. You can also use this technique for using live created loops, like a guitar, a DJambém some drums or any sound recorded on a microphone live, so you are not reduced only to a virtual studio.

If your plug-ins are VST then they will work in any VST capable host.So any available VST to you will work with any DAW nowadays (Cubase, A. LIVE, FL Studio, Reason, Logic...)           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

Thanks knocz, that does sound like a good plan. I mainly asked this because I didn't want to start with one program, learn it well, then find out there are things I want to do that the program can't (even though, as I've been told, each program is equally capable).           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

i only know reason and cubase sx3.

reason really sucks imo. (no plugins???)
the upgrade to cubase was a big step for me, and it wasnt that hard like everyone says.
cubase have it owen little "bugs" what u can avoid with some little tricks, what you have to learn.
but once you got the basics there is not much i dont like.
automation management could be better, but with bouncing you can avoid conflicts too

Why not try a tracker program? for example Renoise? a different aproach but i think some find it easy'er to cope with then most other daws,i do. and its cheap. Dont like cubase interface, un-inspireing for me. Many of you probably wont agree but just to let you know that there's also that possibility

I would say start with Ableton. Its so easy plain and simple. So easy to start. You will be making beats in no time. Cubase is hard to learn, at least for me. Ableton is very creative.By going Ableton way, you can use it as a dj tool, live tool, and production tool.

If you decide to upgrade to Cubase later, you can still use Ableton for live, or dj.

If you decide to go Cubase, then want to switch to ableton, you can just take cubase and throw it in garbage.

Thanks. I've heard Ableton is a bit easier to get started with. I also see myself doing LIVE sets somewhere down the line so that's more reason to learn Ableton. I'll still dj with cd decks as I have been, but knowing the ins and outs would make it easier for a live set I'm sure.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

Both i think.

It's much more easy to work in the studio with Cubase and it's much more easy to perform with Live.
That's what i do and it works just fine

Live : 250 euros (upgrade from LE)
C4 : 450 euros (educational version)

Not so expansive
