Can DJ mixes be sequenced in Cubase? Not for an actual set, but just to put together a good hour long mix without CDJs or Ableton. Whenever I've tried with tracks with the same BPM even, the beats will start slipping no matter how correctly I position them. Any ideas? (Sorry for being off topic) |

From what a producer friend of mine told me: vinyls are better quality yes, but cds provide better clarity between levels (this is why I think cds are better for trance-especially psytrance).

I don't think CD being limited to 16bit 44.1K really translates into it sounding better than vinyl.
I DJ-d only vinyl before 2000 and then switched to CD, used to play both in my sets. Vinyl sounds really fat but the more often you play a record it wears down gets scratches and dust that adds a lot of crackling. CD sounds much more clear and defined, albeit it sometimes I think the vinyl bass sounds more fat, but this could be because the same track is mastered different for vinyl then for CD.
Best sounding is to play the 24bit mastered track on DAT or from Laptop.
Anyhow, vinyl is a nightmare to bring to a warm festival. CD is handy medium, I am looking into DJ-ing from my laptop with external devices to mix properly, think it is bit cheap to press play on abelton and call it a set unless you made each track yourself. Plus then you are not flexible to react to crowd response.

Aille aille aille. CD is more accurate than Vinyl.
One might like the sound of vinyl but it isn't as close a reproduction of the sound as CD is.

get a 4 channels mixer, an interface with 2 stereo outputs.route ableton track 1 to the ch 1 in the mixer , route ableton track 2 to the ch 2 in the mixer, then connect your cdjs to the other 2 ch inputs of the mixer
and star to play |

Btw, if one uses Ableton (or any other software) to do creative mixing, then it is cool. If it is just used to beat match more easily or to prepare the set before hand at home, (as I've seen quite a few times) it sucks hardcore and the person doing this should not be allowed to DJ outside of their bedroom IMNSHO!

Oh I know vinyl sounds better, but the clarity between levels is more prevelant on cds, which is why I consider them a "better choice" for trance music. Vinyls melt the levels together to get that warm sound.

I am interested to know if you were to play your own music through ableton live, how would you go from a song to song?
I am working on a live set but I would rather have a bunch of songs made up that I can play live, not fake live, but real live with my access virus playing 16 parts.
I don't want to mix in from a cdj, so how would you transition. I wish ableton could just open a different song and start playing without the music stopping.
Anyone doing something like this? |

I believe mixing has to be done with players, laptops are cool, and ableton is a great piece of software but nothing compares to the control you have over things with players n mixer.
And it is not just about the control, it is about skills you develope because a computer can beatmatch for you and apply effects exactly on time. While mixing with players will require coordination and doing all this stuff by yourself in real time.
Ableton is for playing live and doing tons of stuff, i agree it is very powerful and so. But djing with hardware cds / vinyl is more traditional and suited for the job IMHO

some urban legends about ableton are seen here, let me tell something about them:
about prepared sets with ableton: ableton contains a fixed timeline where you can arrange bars into a global arrangement yes. usually you do not need this for dj applications and therefore you dont use this. that this option exists does not mean thats the only way to deal with it. ableton live can be setup realy individual and is widely suiteable into personal preferences you like. offcourse you need some experience with software especially mixerrouting for some more complex setups. I usually have 3-4 muted "dead" audiotracks containing all the tracks, something like a virtual case. When I want to play one, I drag&drop it over to of the 3 output-channels.
Second, I cant scratch. but I can do everything what a dj with a hardwaremixer and 1-3 CD-Players is able to. Just a question of audioointerface/mixer/midicontroller (many different setups possible)
I do not have to beatmatch. A Dj needs some technical skills and some artistic skills. Beatmatching is a fundamental part but without any artistic expression or any gift to the musical experience. Its just some part of the technic which needs to run like the a cable which shouldnt be broken. Releasing this part of Djing to the system itself is pleasingly welcome because it gives you more energy to take care about the real important things a Dj has to do like macro-arrangement (trackselection) micro-arrangement (cue-points/breakselection/fades). the problem about beatmatching and fine-adjusting is not that you need time from 30 seconds up to 2 minutes for it (depends on quality of monitors and partysetup). the problem is that you are forced to hear something different to what the crowd hears, means this can lead into a different flow and can make your connection to the vibes of the party a bit more fading away. If you know your tracks 100% you even dont need headphones with ableton realy.
