for somme reason the normal way to make a dj set is bettew vinyl or cd. Mixing with ableton???!!! problebly if you dont have much experience with cdj or vinyl is more easy to do good thing. But what is the point... make the set at home and go to the party and press play and wait....I dont see any plesure with that...
And vinyl vs cd, i prefere cd, and the main reason is the quality. He can't compared the quality of a vinyl record to a cd record...fisical limitation. and in trance area is very difficult to see vinyl.(i never see a trance dj using vinyl....i thing)
And about beatcount.....vinyl or cd...you do it anyway. i do it because the music, not because i use cdj or vinyl.

Dude...!?
What are you talking about ?!?!
CD's Quality is better ??? You should read a bit more about analog recording and digital recording...
It is yet IMPOSSIBLE to reach a high quality with CDs.

Also - I'm not sure where are these trance artists that you see and hear, but I go to alot of TRANCE partys with Turntables & Vinyls !!

Anyway - I also perfer CD/Vinyl over abelton.

I Think your friend is right! Ditch the cds. It's better for you to invest in a laptop then to buy quality mixer and two cd players, plus you can use the computer for other things too. No one cares what the dj is doing as long as the music is good its all good. You can even get more creative djing with a laptop. Since you will have all your beats beat matched you can do other things in your spare time. Throw fx on top, dbglitch it, loop parts , play synths on top, whatever you imagine. Ableton live is the way to go bro!

From what a producer friend of mine told me: vinyls are better quality yes, but cds provide better clarity between levels (this is why I think cds are better for trance-especially psytrance).           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

vinly has one big disadvance: their weight!
since not every psytrance dj has an idiot to carry his cases after him

Ableton is the future, you can do so many things with it, I use Ableton Live with 4 outputs, it's my best friend.
Love it.
But that is my personal choice, less CD's to carry...blah blah           www.myspace.com/enertopiapsy

i also prefer ableton for djing because of the following reasons....

1. can play tracks with better quality....

2. have much much more effects than cdjs....

3. can see the progress of track and decide the fx what is best for it right there for the crowd..... instead of just trying luck....... and missing one or two beats here and there..

4. mixing can be done better in ableton and if i want i can open 10 tracks also at the same time and use them as 1 long track by mixing in all 10 tracks at the same time...... just like ppl do in cdjs with only 2 or maximum 4 tracks.....

i think that is enough for me to go for ableton......

boommm

I Dj with ableton, I have a Dj team running together with Bitshift
We plug 2 Macbooks together, sync them and therefore we have a lot possibilities. Both outputs run into a mixer and we 2 midicontroller-keyboards for controlling ableton.

What I love most about djing with ableton is that it is not like running a track and mix another into it. You are able to re-arrange the tunes and extract or cut loops directly with 2 which turned out the be great for direct actions if you are playing on a party depending on what you feel would be the best now. A usual Dj with CD or Vinyl is not able to do this.

You can layer 2 miditriggers on "Start Loop" and "End Loop" which means you can repeat a phrase of the song whenever you want instantly. Another nice thing is to have a delay on the pitchwheel fading in/out.
The advantage of beeing a dj-team offers us that one is fully mixing 1-3 tracks together inside of his ableton while other one is adding samples and loops and vise versa. We allready have made some greatsounding live "remixes" of some tunes. Mixing loops of 3 minimaltracks together with the intro guitar-riff of korns "blind" together can be a pleasing experience for example
some loops of our sample-library turned out to be greatsounding dj tools too.

the main reason why we do not play with vinyl or cd is reasoned by that fact the we came from the producing corner and have a more natural connection to midi, software, keyboards and stuff like that.

about people which say that playing with ableton live sucks we just have nothing to say. until now our gigs have been very successfull which is also reasoned because i think its more interesting for people to watch on the stage and see 2 busy people which lots of gear and lots of fun. we also plan to bring our microkorg with us next time - it contains a mic with a vocoder.

by the way we are more into minimal, techno, electronica, electrohouse and some proggy trance tunes. this music is more minimalistic and offers more room to play lots of loops together. i think typical fullon is way too overloaded for doing this the same way for example, but maybe someone shares some experiences here.
